Since it seems likely that the 2009 F1 race at Nurburgring could be the last, I decided to post some of my pictures I shot at the old long course in 1968.

(imageshack no longer allows hotlinks to full sized images, so these thumbnails should link to the full image.)

Believe it or not, I've posted plenty of pictures before this. The problem was the way imageshack displays the linking info. I had to copy lots of stuff I didn't need for the links and then edit the info down.

Anyway, I hope everyone finds the pictures interesting.

If you copy the FORUM info and paste it right in, it seems to work.

What a list of drivers. I was just turning one that summer, but there are only two or three drivers that I'm not familiar with.

Great pictures. Sometimes I begin to forget how dangerous the tracks really were back then.

where were you watching from? I would guess the section before the Schwedenkreuz.

I was near the entry to Schwalbenschwanz.

The fence posts alone make me cringe.

Great shots. Thanks

Thanks for posting those. What other races did you attend?

That was the only F1 race I attended during my trips to Europe. I did make it to a 24 hours of Le mans and I also went to several races at Hockenheim (when the circuit still included the long forest leg where Jim Clark was killed), one of which was an F2 race in 1970. BMW was dominant in F2 at the time and they smoked the field. I recall that BMW won every race that year.

Awesome, but some of those spectators have a death wish.

.. some of those spectators have a death wish.

So true.

And I was one of them! That's me holding the umbrella in one of the pics.

But I must say that I don't recall any of my fellow fans or myself expressing a second thought about pressing against the fence the entire race totally absorbed with the excitement of the cars screaming by in a downpour.

You used to be able to get about that close to the track at Road America. I remember watching the Can-Am cars go by on the back straight heading for Turn 5 from the woods on the east side of the track and we were about that close.

Ya, I was going to post that too. The whole track was lined with light blue guard rail a couple feet high and a wooden snow fence :D Nobody thought anything of it. They did'nt put in the concrete walls and catch fence until after a couple of CART cars ended up in the parking areas.

Portland was that way before CART arrived. I remember leaning up against the armco watching Trans Am cars blowing past where the Festival Curves are now in the early 80's.

Great stuff thanks for posting...Im really getting the itch to get over there for my third Nurburgring lapping session. I was just past the age of one also when that race was held. Been reading Jackie Stewart's excellent new book- I think it's true if you say you enjoy driving on the ring then you're a either liar or you're not going fast enough!

Did anyone download any of the pics I posted? I have lost them and it seems that they no longer exist at imageshack. I would appreciate any help recovering them if you have copies. Thanks. Ed
