View Full Version : Your must-have at work things

Nearly everyone here works, but we have widely differing jobs; I was wondering what everyone feels is indispensable at work... not a stapler or a copy machine or a tape measure or Google, but something non-job-related that helps you get through the day.

My list:

1. Pandora.com
2. Headphones
3. GTalk
4. Hand sanitizer
5. Diet Coke

I quite literally would crack without these things. We're not allowed to have music playing software on our PCs, but we can get to Pandora, and it has been a lifesaver -- ditto the headphones. Google Talk keeps me connected to people I care about a lot more than my co-workers. I'm a germ freak and the people around me creep me out, hence the sanitizer. And Diet Coke... oh how I pine for thee....

You?

Sirius radio. 140 kms each way to work, and local radio reception disappears about 50 kms out. (Even when I can get local radio it's awful: CBC, country and an incredibly bad "classic rock" station).

Fingers crossed that satellite radio doesn't go under.

And a 12 gauge slug gun, (for bear defense).

In light of the expanded recall of peanut butter and peanut butter-based products, Tasty Baking Company announced today that all Tastykake products, including the iconic Peanut Butter Kandy Kake, are safe for consumption and not included in the national recall program.

I just started brewing french press brewed coffee at home last year, and it is the best!

I like to use the Starbucks Komodo Dragon, or Sumatra, with a good coarse grind.

Add some half/half and some sugar in the raw, or a little bit of the coffee-mate "Italian sweet cream" and my morning/day is perfect

Okay what is the deal with all the hand sanitizer?

Granted I spend much of the day with smurf hands
http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/opticsplanet_2039_409779387
but that is mostly to prevent me from contaminating what I'm working on.

Perhaps I've watched too many "ZOMG THE GERMS!" specials on TV, and perhaps it's 99% mental, but I use it because I don't like to get sick and I think everyone I work with with the exception of about 3 people are disgusting cretins who are probably carrying bird flu.

I also travel a lot and I can't even imagine what I'm cleaning off my hands after using handrails, restrooms, armrests, and countertops at airports. Then, in the plane, the armrests, seats, air vents, seatbelt buckles, etc... bleargh.

I spend a good portion of the day at the keyboard. So if I happen to sneeze or cough into my hand the prospect of just carrying on with typing is kind of gross.

There was some informal testing of computer keyboards in the UK last year with results that made for eye catching headlines.

Computer keyboard 5 times dirtier than toilet seat (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-563110/How-keyboard-FIVE-TIMES-dirtier-toilet-seat--qwerty-tummy.html)

Mebbe so but the correct response it to wash your hands and clean your keyboard. You use hand sanitizer then go straight back to typing on the dirty keyboard and you have accomplished exactly ???
