It is only fair that if the women wear bikinis, the blokes wear budgie smugglers.

I had no idea trampoline was a sport. They were pretty good at it though.

Bolt jogs through his 200M heat.

Edit:

From an AP story:

Just as she did four years ago, May-Treanor sprinkled some of her mom's ashes on the sand after the semifinal, saving another half-portion for a similar ceremony at the gold medal game.

"You can't leave home without her," May-Treanor said, tapping the plastic film canister she used to carry Barbara May's remains. "But she'll stay here."

That seems a touch bizarre to me.

Introduced in Sydney. There are also three other internationally recognised forms of gymnastics which are not recognised in the Olympic Games-aerobics, acrobatics and cheerleading.

Likely @ the cost of playing water polo? More specifically the head stated that a race was run b/w an Ozzie swimmer and a water polo player, and the water polo player won. Whether this translates universally is TBD. YMMV.

Kinda. They can out swim the best sprinters in a 15m race, not 50m. Massive short accelerations are required. I heard it when the commentator said that, but he either misspoke or doesn't know.

To me the real challenge of water polo was always the fact that the officials can't see what goes on under the water, so a lot goes on. Some underwater shots from the mens US vs Germany game showed glimpses of how brutal it is. The fact that the US team is beating these very experienced pro players says it all IMO. Scoring 7pts on the best net man in the game is unheard of and takes massive skill along with brutality.

I can't wait to get the games to London.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2603561/Led-Zeppelin-classic-too-racy-for-Olympics.html

Organisers of the London 2012 Games commissioned the band's guitarist Jimmy Page to record a new version of the song to be performed on top of a special red double-decker bus accompanied by Leona Lewis, winner of the ITV reality television show The X Factor, with David Beckham looking on.

But, according to London 2012 officials, Lewis - who grew up in east London close to the Olympic site - requested a change to the song's second verse because she was worried they would not make sense for a female singer.

In the original, recorded in 1969, frontman Robert Plant sings, "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love".

But in the version that will be sung tomorrow, however, Lewis changes the words to "every bit" of my love.

Unless you plan on karking it soon, I wouldn't bet on that. They have the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. I would put money on it being a huge success and a follow up Olympic bid being accepted for sometime around 2020.

I agree with you that India is a long shot to host a Games. The IOC may not see it as "cosmopolitan" enough to be a host nation. No dig against India, as I'm sure its a lovely nation, but the IOC can sometimes think mainly about wine-ing and dining and commercial ops before considering the sports aspect.

Its also not yet a full sports power. Look at where the last Summer Games have been held - US ('96), Australia ('00), Greece ('04, but widely considered a make-good for '96) and now China. All of those nations (with the exception of Greece) can be considered sports powerhouses. Britain is on its way up. The countries under consideration for '16 are all powerhouses (Brazil, US, Spain). IIRC, India just won its first gold medal ever in Beijing.

All in all, I think they have a way to go before being successful at winning a bid for a Games.

I read that too and thought the old fart was being his usual lunatic self. I do not agree at ALL with assailing a judge......however.......I did watch one of the gold medal boxing matches where the opponent literally wrapped his arms around the Cuban and threw him to the mat on TWO different occasions. I don't know boxing but TravelGuy was screaming at the TV. Then the guy said the Cuban boxer bit him. The ref didn't check in any way, he just awareded two points. The Cuban lost the gold by one point. We stopped watching boxing after that. It stank out loud, the way it used to here in the US before it sank from sight.

The boxing scoring/officiating was just heinous. As noted in a previous post I tuned in Sat to see Teddy Atlas and the play-by-play guy rant for 15 minutes on how bad the new scoring system and officiating was. They should just do away with boxing in the Olympics if they can't get it right.

IIRC, India just won its first gold medal ever in Beijing.

first gold medal that wasn't for field hockey, India has plenty of those. I say the gold medalist should be given a sniper rifle & a post on the Line of Control. make use of the sharp shooting skills.

Unless you plan on karking it soon, I wouldn't bet on that. They have the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. I would put money on it being a huge success and a follow up Olympic bid being accepted for sometime around 2020.

I am more than aware of how India is. I spent the last fair while working almost exclusively with Indians, many of whom have become good mates. They are remarkably honest about how it actually is.

Indians suck.

The video was taken down. So much for sportsmanship. He should have been arrested too. Even the coach has a bad attitude. Maybe Cuba should be banned from entering Taekwondo in future Olympics.
If you want to see it, before the NBC guys find it, it's linked at Opie and Anthony's terrestrial radio site, This is the "censored" site for the most part (http://www.923krock.com/pages/1420414.php#mon)

Still pics are actually better, since they are closeups.

That's what I get for listening to Blob Costas.

I believe that a few members of the US rifle team are US military sharpshooters.

Do you know how big an event the commonwealth games is?

From what Wiki tells me, about 5,000 athletes from 53 countries. Compare that with the last Olympics which had 10,000 athletes plus assorted team, sponsor and corporate personnel.

My point is this, the Commonwealth Games are a huge event. Recent events contain about half the number of athletes, 40% of the countries (basically oceania, half of africa, various asian countries, the UK, caribbean, a couple of south americans and Canada-85 for 2010) and almost as many sports, events and spectators. It is an event not all that much smaller than the Olympics with the exception of the number of athletes. India will pull it off spectacularly (dare I say it, better than the Chinese did the Olympics) and as a result, there will be an Olympics probably in Bangalore or Mumbai by 2024.

But with no athletes? India had <60 athletes at the Olympics this year. That to me is the biggest impediment. Well, that and infrastructure.

I was with ya up until "better than the Chinese did the Olympics." I can't believe anyting other than another totalitarian government can pull that off.

Looks like you've quoted an event about 1/3 the size of the Olympics, which is not to say it is small. It is to say that events have number over which they become a different type of organizational problem. As a microcosm, anyone who has ever organized a meeting for 30, then 300, then 800 knows what I'm talking about. The entire character of the event and what is required changes dramatically. So it is, I am sure, with going from 5,000 to 15,000 athletes.

But don't forget that the home country gets an entry in every sport if they want it. At least the opening parade of nations would be impresive, if not the results.

I, for one, think it's a grand idea and would look forward to going back to India to see it. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't people in the Indian government speaking about it right now. Once the Commonwealth Games are over, of course.

I thought about that, but what an embarrassment it would be to be at the bottom of the medal count when you're hosting the Olympics. It just does not seem to be a priority of the people to compete in Olympic events. I'm sure they're talking about it though. The amount of exposure that China has received would make it foolish for them not to try and get it. Of course, in the larger cities, you'd have similar air quality issues.

*cough Greece cough*
*cough Spain cough*
*cough South Korea cough*

none of them exactly topped the medal tally when they hosted it in the last twenty years. It has absolutely nothing to do with the overall results. If it was, most countries wouldn't bother sending an athlete. There is more to the Olympic Games than just gold medal count

And don't forget the biggest cough of all--Mexico City. Altitude and bad air both. There is always a big boost for the home country in medal count but as OOW says, I doubt it's ALL about the medal count when you are deciding to host or not to host.
