In retrospect, I never shoulda been shooting photos while on the turns, but was still a rookie, and just observing things pretty much.

Go Nigel, GO!

Remember the last 6 laps of the race, Nigel was running P5, Emmo was P4.

Nigel was desperately trying to get past him to try to make a run at Gordon and Unser Jr. Emerson had started 12th, and was also pushing hard to maintain a podium spot, and chase down the kids up front.

On the last lap, Nigel got way underneath Emmo coming into turn 12, and Emmo slammed the door on him. The two spun sideways into the tires, and bounced right back out into the racing line, only leaving a few feet for the other cars to squeeze through on the inside, almost touching the walls with their wheels.

DOH!!!!

Emmo threw his steering wheel out of the car towards the inside of the track, and landed near one of my other workers and he reached over and grabbed it and handed it to me. For an instant, I was thinking that I need to stash this souvenir away quickly. (ended up not doing so, and walking it over to the crew guys once everyone was flagged)

Emmo and Nigel were in each others face and making some not so nice gestures to one another as they walked back to pit lane, thats when a lot of the guys watching the race from the scaffolding and Hi-Lifts outside the turn started yelling "Kick his ass Emmo!!!!", and anyone within earshot (including us turn workers) were laughing. Emmo and Nige walked into pit lane, not likely talking about what kind of floral arrangements each of them likes to have on their dinner tables, and they ended up finishing 9th and 10th respectively.

When the crews for Newman-Haas and Penske came out to retrieve their broken cars, Nigels car had a good amount of steam/smoke rising from the cowling, and one of the CART Safety team guys walked over with a fire extinguisher, to get a "let that ****ing thing burn!" from one of the Penske guys. Epic!!!

From everything that I have seen, that was a classic moment, and the battle those two had on the track that day was something to watch. Either one of them probably had a good shot at the win had they not been so consumed in their battle for 4th.

Finally got these photos scanned, and you can see them for the first time.

Ah the memories of the good old days when the chariots were real race cars and the sponsors aplenty.

Nice pics!

God that sounds so wrong on so many levels. Shocking that Nig did not get punted at T1 on the first lap by Gordon.

The thing to remember is that it was in this setting and this context that Tony George was planning his new series that was going to "save" open-wheel racing. :shakehead

I still smile when I recall the "Arrivederci Nigel" banner that greeted him in the paddock at Road America.:)

Really excellent point. And if you look at the tobacco contracts on the other thead, by my read the funding BW gave Green for their INDYLIGHT! program would nearly fund half the TEAM funding of the entire IRL field this year. In 1994 dollars.
