I read earlier today the rumor was false.

I'll see if I can find it.

Edit:

Story (http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/11/people.paulnewman.ap/index.html) has changed a bit since this morning.

Get well Paul!

Be well, PLN. They broke the mold after they made you.

I saw a story on E last night. PLN has basically turned over the reins of his company, and has donated around $120mm to charity.

I never saw him at LB this year. I figured he'd certainly be there for the last ever Champ Car race. I had an ominous feeling then about the rumors of his health.

Hoping for the best. He's a special person. We're lucky that he loved racing.

Agreed... and I don't get the impression he'd want people fretting about his health. I'd imagine he is still home having a beer and watching the racing.

He was in Long Beach, though. And he has looked that gaunt for quite some time. Apparently since it was diagnosed 18 months ago. You have to love the fact that he refuses to sensationalize it. Class all the way.

Yeah, if anything he seems to be doing better for the moment. He's always been lean so that losing 5lbs would be noticeable. Agreed, a first class guy that brought an awful lot to the party.

maybe prostate cancer? responce in article i posted...

I am a great fan of Paul Newman. He and I have prostate cancer. We have the same urologist. I had surgery to remove my prostrate and I am cancer free for ten years now. On my doctors office wall is a hand written letter from Paul Newman thanking him for saving lives and that he would begin his radiation treatments soon.

"Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Lime Rock Park was closed down for an hour and a half today to honour Paul Newman. He was attended by his family, close friends, Skip Barber, mechanics on his race team, and those who happened to be at the track. Newman toured the track in his Corvette race car with his Buick V8 powered Volvo station wagon following. He had come to say goodbye. Diagnosed with terminal cancer he is not expected to live beyond September. Race driver, actor, humanitarian, family man and friend -- they did not come any better."

A couple lines from some of the online obits:

"Racing is the best way I know to get away from all the rubbish of Hollywood," he told People magazine in 1979.

Off the screen, Newman had a taste for beer and was known for his practical jokes. He once had a Porsche installed in Redford's hallway - crushed and covered with ribbons.

Newman, who shunned Hollywood life, was reluctant to give interviews and usually refused to sign autographs because he found the majesty of the act offensive, according to one friend.

He stumped for liberal causes, including Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential candidacy, and earned a spot on Richard Nixon's enemies list -- "the highest single honor I've ever received," he said.

Granted, I don't think any of us knew him personally - but the shared love of racing, seeing him in the paddock and on the timing stand, those that crossed paths with him at the races - I think we had the opportunity to see more of the real PN than those that saw just the actor.

We need more Paul Newmans. He made the world a better place.

If nothing else, I'm glad I used to watch racing as I was able to see how one principled man in an ocean of sharks can set a good example that we can all use in our own lives to be ethical and honest to ourselves and those around us.

RIP PLN. You were the man.

Newman earned his first of four SCCA National titles in 1976 in the D-Production category. He also won titles in the 1979 C-Production class and was the GT-1 champion in both 1985 and 1986.

I was at Daytona in 2005 for the 24-hours. Who knew at the time that it would be his last pro-race.

A great man, a brilliant actor, and good race car driver. Like CNN or MSNBC said, who wouldn't want to be Paul Newman?

We all knew this day was coming, but no one knew how sad we'd all be...

Tonight, put a DVD one of of your favorite Paul Newman movies, enjoy a beer and give a little something to one of his many charities.

Rest in piece Paul, you were one of a kind and the world is a better place because of you. Thanks!

One quote I found today in an article in the freep....

Until two years ago, Newman had the task of personally distributing the company’s profits. But he and Forrester set up a private, independent foundation, known as Newman’s Own Foundation, to carry on the work without Newman.

“Really, everything is in great shape,” Forrester said of the foundation and the company after Newman’s death.

“He said, ’When I’m not here, this foundation is to continue the tradition of giving all of this money away,’” Forrester said.

Forrester joked how such planning wasn’t part of Newman’s nature. A sign famously hangs in Newman’s Westport, Conn., offices that reads, “If I had a plan I would be screwed.”

I need a sign like that. :D

postscript: Newman names wife and foundation as beneficiaries in will....

Actor Paul Newman, who died in September, left his assets to his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, and to the Newman's Own Foundation he founded, according to a will made public this week.

The 10-time Academy Award nominee died Sept. 26 at age 83 following a long battle with cancer. His will, signed April 11, 2008, was filed in probate court in Connecticut.

Newman left his personal property, including real estate, to Woodward. He left his Oscars and other awards, and his interest in Newman's Own and Salad King to Newman's Own Foundation.
