I finally had a chance to listen to that video. Greatly moved me. I wish there were an effort in this country to take two minutes of time at the 11th hour of the 11th month to remember the vets and those who still serve. "Veterans Day" is all but forgotten now because it's not one of the holidays moved to a Monday to create a three-day weekend. :rolleyes:

I saw part of a documentary the other day about the documentary/propoganda work that John Ford did during WWII. One of the most poignant parts was footage of the members of Torpedo Squadron 8 shot just before the Battle of Midway. Ordinary guys mugging for the camera unaware that their squadron would soon be wiped out. Men fated to never know that their sacrifice would help secure one of the most important Naval victories in our history.

With the History channel and Medal of Honor, D-day seems to always be with us. To put the amount of time that has passed in perspective, June 6, 1944 is as far removed from the present day as 1877 was to the soldiers storming those beaches.

This date is remembered, along with it's twin Dec 7 1942, above all others, including VE and VJ days, because it reminds us that evil must be challenged and can be defeated. May the sacrifice of those who fought for freedom never be forgotten. May their example remain bright and undimmed.

The house featured at 1:50 in the above video still stands today. It became the first headquarters of Canadian Forces landing on D-day and is known as 'Canada House'.

Having walked those beautiful tranquil beaches a few times I still cannot imagine what an absolute hell on earth it must have been on the day...

To the allied soldiers, Brits, Canadians, Yanks, Free-French, Polish...from the bottom of my British heart, thank you for your sacrifice...Your actions signaled the beginning of the end of the ultimate evil that was Hitler and his fascism, and kept my quiet little island free and (relatively) un-spoiled..

I remember what a big deal the 50th anniversary was. A restored liberty ship the SS Jeremiah O'Brien made a return voyage from San Francisco to be part of the ceremony. The only ship from the original armada to do so.

If you are ever in San Fran and have a few hours to spare I can highly recommend a visit to see the old girl. We were amazed by the men and women who made her, the men who sailed her and the Team who have restored her. :thumbup:

When you look at all of the photos and videos and see how many sisters she had and wonder what happened to them...

It's the shear magnitude of the numbers involved. 1700+ aircraft ran sorties during the invasion. Another doco I saw mentioned a bombing campaign of 18K planes to softened the German resistance. :eek: Unfortunately some of the planes became confused about where they were and dropped their ordinance onto friendly troops. Makes Desert Storm look like a spit into the ocean.
