Apparently, Danica hit and injured one of her crew guys on pit road.:gomer:

Edit:

Dave Calabro reports that Danica Patrick was pulling into her pit when an unidentified person crossed in front of her car. The person is NOT a member of Danica's crew.

Dick Rea reports that the person hit is being ground transported to Methodist. The person is being treated for a concussion and lacerations. The name of injured is not being released until family is notified.

One of Coyne's guys, apparently (http://sports.yahoo.com/irl/news?slug=txpatrickaccident&prov=st&type=lgns).

I was about to start a new thread about Mrs. Patrick, but I'll just tack it on here...

The thread title was going to be something like Save Us Danica! Save Us and AOWR!

Started perusing an article on Fox Sports. Stopped reading it when I hit the following line...

The open-wheel-racing feud is over. Tony George won a long, bloody and almost deadly war, forcing Champ Car to surrender to the wants of George's Indy Racing League. Now it's time for Danica Patrick to save open-wheel racing.

Here's the link to the article, but Mr. Whitlock's last sentence pretty much tells me what it's going to be about.

With that in mind, I sat down with Patrick 12 days ago at Kansas Speedway and chatted up my second-favorite driver of all-time (after Tom "The Gas Man" Sneva).

I used to respect Whitlock.... :irked:  :yuck:

Ya know, Whitlock CAN be semi-thoughtful at times. This is not one of those times.

In retrospect, one of the most unfair things about DanicaMania '05 style was this notion that only Danica can save the sport.

1. She's just a competent mid-packer. Nothing wrong with that (She's no King Hiro), but really people.

2. It's silly to think any one driver can do this. Furthermore, a sport cannot rise or fall on just one person. If it does, well, there are big problems.

ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/racing/indycar/news/story?id=3388539) has video of the wreck. He's lucky he didn't get hurt any worse than he did.

Looks like the front wing clipped his feet out from under him and his face hit the rear tire or wing.

I swear to G..d that when I read the notice from Dale Coyne Racing, I thought it had to be a gag. I kept waiting for the "pressdog" byline. NOBODY could be that stupid. After I got to the bottom, I realized, yes, someone could.

Seeing it on ESPN was scary. She clipped him a good one. "I really don't remember how it happened," said Dale Coyne Racing Crew Chief Chuck Buckman. "All I remember was talking with someone on Marco Andretti's team and then everything is blank from that point." Looked like Mario standing there to me.

Press release from DC-

Dale Coyne Racing Crew Chief Injuried

Indianapolis, Indiana (May 9, 2008) - Dale Coyne Racing Crew Chief Chuck Buckman (#19 Sonny's Bar B-Q) was injured Friday afternoon when he was hit from behind by Danica Patrick's front wing while walking in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway pit during practice.

Buckman was initially unconscious after being hit, but regained consciousness and was alert at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Infield Care Center before being taken to Methodist Hospital for CAT scans to check for any internal injuries.

"I really don't remember how it happened," said Dale Coyne Racing Crew Chief Chuck Buckman. "All I remember was talking with someone on Marco Andretti's team and then everything is blank from that point. I will be OK and hopefully back to work in a day or two."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Chuck," said team owner Dale Coyne.
"Hopefully he will be all right and we can get him back in our pit soon."

Buckman will spend Friday night in ICU at Methodist Hospital before undergoing another CAT scan Saturday morning.

Here's a pic right after it happened-

Scary stuff. Hope he's alright. He was standing in Marco's pit box when it happened.

Fine it was a hot pit and all but there were quite a few people wandering around those boxes. Shouldn't someone (just about everyone?) in the AGR crew have known that she was coming in and told people to get out of the way? Aren't they supposed to be checking to see that the area is clear before the car arrives?

Yeah, that's definitely Mario in the picture. Dude was damn lucky he wasn't killed the way he was headed into the rear tire. WTF aren't the crew guys wearing helmets during practice? :irked:

from what I can remember, they aren't required to. They often wear shorts too

Wow, that was wild. Why was she coming in so fast and what was she looking at? I thought the accident happened when she was pulling away, not coming in. There is no reason to come in so hot when there is cars and people around youre pit area during practice.

I'm not about to throw down blame nor innocence, but practice is a great time to, uh, practice hitting your marks, whether the dancing cellphone-on-a-stick is there or not. Might explain the speed.

Helmets are for race day. I don't think they use them in practice.

I've never been to a track that allowed shorts (or open-toed shoes) in the pits.

She was prolly concentrating on the RF guy for the other car.

It took me all of a single day of practice to realize which side of the pitwall I should hang out on.:D 60 MPH to zero, 6 inches from my leg... maybe there's a better place for my leg to be. Like, attached or something.

All that blah-de-blah said, if she had just turned the wheel to the right a bit...

Get well, Buckman.

M-O allowed shorts in the pit up until about an hour before gridding when I was last there in '02.

I'd think in a hot pit that you'd look down (and around) pit road whenever you walk. I just don't see how it's anyone else's fault besides Chuck's.

I never said it was her fault, I just meant to imply they may as well have sent out a mannequin with a speaker on it playing recordings of platitudes instead.

Warning to others. I've never seen the last video (track worker killed in 1990) and now wish I hadn't. The slow motion is terrible. (I'm not blaming OW, the video clearly is for adults and says fatality.)

I saw the Greg Moore accident. It was scary, then sad finding out he had died. I can watch the destruction of a car, but there's just something disturbing (to me) about seeing and knowing someone died. (Like the Faces of Death movies.)

Moore's wreck was perhaps the worst moment in my motorsports life. Live on TV in front of me, not just reported in the fine print of the paper the next day. I've only be at the track for one fatal incident, and that was a heart attack at an historics event.
