Traction control is one element of it. There also exist driver aids to make the cars more stable under braking, through the corners and so on. The aero and mechanical character of the cars matters also. The cars are still alot easier to drive than they were 15 years ago. During 2 days of practise for the 1994 Hungarian GP there were over 50 spins, and Schumacher was lapping 2 seconds quicker than Verstappen. If it was held in today's cars there'd be 0 spins and Schumacher would lap 2 tenths quicker than Verstappen who would be on the same row as him.
