It's been almost two years since this thread: http://www.offcamber.net/forums/printthread.php?t=10845

Wanted to revive it with a little twist...

Best single (two, tops) line from a song lyric you've ever heard. Made you think, made you laugh, made you emotional... something.

Plus, I'm ... working on something. And you'll help with it. And I won't have to pay you for it.

if i coulda wrote a song for my daughter, this would be it....

Tell Her This
(Currie, Harvie)

Tell her not to go
I ain't holding on no more
Tell her something in my mind freezes up from time to time

Tell her not to cry
I just got scared that's all
Tell her I'll be by her side, all she has to do is call

Tell her the chips are down
I drank too much and shouted it aloud
Tell her something in my heart
Needs her more than even clowns need the laughter of the crowd

Tell her what was wrong
I sometimes think to much
But say nothing at all
And tell her from this high terrain, I am ready now to fall

Tell her not to go
I ain't holding on no more
Tell her nothing if not this; all I want to do is kiss her

Tell her something in my mind
Freezes up from time to time.

There's a conversation
We're about to have
And it's full of twists and turns
Half truths and vague concerns
From one who never learns
To one who never learns
And I never learn

-Jon Brion from the song Trouble

Curtain opens, spotlights the gentleman
Signing his love letter best wishes Simpleton
Dialog swam from his pen like pollywogs

He knew better that perfume was gravity
Pulling him closer to what could be tragedy
Love is blind, deaf and dumb, but never mind.

-Jellyfish from the song New Mistake

Let me clarify...

One or two lines, tops. Help a brother out.

"I don't want to meet your friend
And I don't want to start over again" -- Everclear, Wonderful
(I swear I'm one of 7 people on the planet who understand this lyric... every stupid lyric site on the tubes says "friends"... gah)

"I do things my way, and I pay a high price" -- John Mellencamp, Minutes to Memories

"Best" is tough and I'll probably think of others.

But for me the music from Warren Zevon's final album, written while he was fighting terminal cancer, has a lot of emotional impact. The final song "Keep Me In Your Heart" has a couple of lines that are beautiful and painful.

"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less."

and

"There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done."

Can't pick only one; these came to my mind first:

Between the horses of love and lust
We are trampled underfoot

still looking for the face I had before the world was made

You hurt yourself you hurt your lover, then you discover
What you thought was freedom was just greed

You're in my mind all of the time...I know that's not enough

"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less."

That's pretty close to a Sarah McLachlan lyric, isn't it?

As far as somewhat cool and in the unexpected rhyme category, I'd have to say:

"You struck me dumb - like Radium".

And in the more than one line category:

He liked to watch an evening pass
Clinking the ice in his bourbon glass while you played your scales
With eyes that burned right through
He would say he always knew you were bound to fail.

Yes, from "Wait", Sarah MacLachlan's lyric is "You know if I leave you now
it doesn't mean that I love you any less". Funny, I know the song but had never really associated the two. Different context, I suppose.

the line I like is about cigarettes..

So you've got to be real careful, and always on your guard
Falling in love, you know it's harmful to your heart
It's worse than they suspected, it's as bad as it gets

If I ever had the guts to Karaoke, this is the song I would do (ain't ever gonna happen, tho). :gomer:

The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind so Mary climb in
It's town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win

There's a black man with a black cat
Living in a black neighbourhood
He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard

Good one TKG. I was thinking of posting almost all of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah.

I don't know if anyone saw the R&R Hall of Fame induction ceremony this year but the guy who sang it there for Cohen's induction sent chills down my spine.

I awoke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Aint it funny how the night moves
When you just dont seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in

Rocking to some Seger right now, I've always been drawn to Night Moves:

was a little too tall
Couldve used a few pounds
Tight pants points hardly reknown
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points all her own sitting way up high
Way up firm and high

Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my 60 chevy
Workin on mysteries without any clues
Workin on our night moves
Tryin to make some front page drive-in news
Workin on our night moves
In the summertime
In the sweet summertime

We werent in love, oh no, far from it
We werent searchin for some pie in the sky summit
We were just young and restless and bored
Livin by the sword
And wed steal away every chance we could
To the backroom, to the alley or the trusty woods
I used her, she used me
But neither one cared
We were gettin our share
Workin on our night moves
Tryin to lose the awkward teenage blues
Workin on our night moves
And it was summertime

And oh the wonder
We felt the lightning
And we waited on the thunder
Waited on the thunder

I awoke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Aint it funny how the night moves

Strange how the night moves
