To dither or not to dither, that is the question.

There are a whole lot of 6-bit twisted nematic + film lcd panels out there and Apple is using them in their portables, (all of them) and the 20" iMac.

The larger Apple displays use 8-bit S-IPS panels and they can display true 24-bit color.

Problem is Apple does not tell you that in any of their literature. Everything Apple sells is listed as capable of "millions of colors".

It doesn't matter except for the people it screws over (production color specialists) who should know better.

and I guess the new higher end Apple displays are now using H-IPS panels.

It is much ado about nothing but it is also a ******** policy on Apple's part.
They and every other manufacturer should make it clear what type of display you are buying.

Apple is not alone with this crap.

Apple is not alone with this crap. No, they're not. Since LG/philips and Samsung make most of the panels for LCD displays all the companies are selling the same panels regardless of the name on the bezel. When 19" displays were hot both Sony and Viewsonic were selling 6 bit panels and not disclosing the actual specs.

BTW coolhand, the average profit gross margin for manufacturing is 40% so 33% is not remarkable. With a 33% gross margin their net is probably below 8%. Any lower and it would make more sense to shut the doors and stay home and clip 5.5% bond coupons....
