I'm really looking forward to the new Yankees. The Steinbrenner boys are now running the show with a whole new brand of zaniness. Girardi has very much imprinted a more serious style. And Chamberline, Hughes and Kennedy will be fun.

Could well be the last year for Pettite, Giambi, Mussina, and Matsui. Some of that is good/bad.

Last year for the stadium, though I'm going to have to work hard to get to a game. 3.8 million tickets already sold.

If the Cubs get Brian Roberts they're gonna win the... terrible Central Division. Maybe. Just like the Bears were going to walk the NFC North! These are the types of years the Chubs stroke it hard. When expectations are high and the line-up is good on paper they chunk it.

I actually caught myself being slightly deluded by Cubs madness. My gf (not the crazy billionaire) lives about 8 blocks south of Wrigley and is considering moving more downtown this summer. I almost said she should stay where she is in case the sCrUBS go to the Series as its a fantastic location to be walking distance to and from Wrigleyville for the historic occasion. I realized what I was about to say and accepted the truth of another sub 70 win season.

Back on topic...

Great little story in the Ledger this a.m. about folks who had tickets to yesterday's rained out Yanks opener. Yanks always put an off day after the opener in case it gets rained out. Fans just use their ticket the next day. If they can't make it they can exchange it for another game.

In line yesterday to swap their tickets were a father and 10 year old son from Georgia. They had flown up to see the last home opener in the Stadium. When the reporter asked why they weren't staying fo rthe game tonight, the kid grumbled "Little Mermaid"

Turns out part of the deal in coming up was they would also take little sister and mom to the Broadway play and they had expensive hard to get tickets to tonight's showing.

Poor kid. :shakehead :D

When the Giants spent $126 million on Barry Zito, they touted his ability to take the ball every fifth day.
But now, barely more than one season into a seven-year deal, they aren't sure they want to keep giving it to him.

After another erratic and utterly hittable start in a 10-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, Giants Manager Bruce Bochy all but declared he would skip Zito or demote him to the bullpen.

"We've got to do something," said Bochy, after Zito allowed a six-run first inning. "We can't keep doing what we're doing and getting what we're getting."

Here is what the Giants have received from their opening day starter: an 0-6 record in six starts, a 7.81 ERA, a growing soundtrack of boos at home and no sign of a break in the clouds.

The decision to cut him will cost the Pirates more than $10 million, besides what they already have paid him this season. Morris is making $9.5 million, or about one-fifth of the Pirates' payroll, and has a $1 million buyout for 2009

As for Zito, I'm just glad I don't have to worry about him becoming a Yankee. I never disliked Zito, he just rarely pitched well against the Yankees and came with a high sticker price.

If anyone was offended by the White Sox having a pair of inflatable dolls surrounded by bats and a sign encouraging players to "push" in their clubhouse before Sunday's game in Toronto, don't expect an apology from manager Ozzie Guillen.

"I'm sure it wasn't done to disrespect anyone," Guillen said Monday. "Everyone in the clubhouse, 100 percent of the people in the clubhouse, they are 18 years old and that's a private thing. If the players do it in the dugout so everyone in the public could see it, or did it in the hotel lobby . . . we did it in the clubhouse. A lot of worse things happen in the clubhouse. I don't really know why people are making it a big deal. If people got their feelings hurt because of that . . . they don't really know much about baseball."

When I saw that I thought he is really going to be sorry for that.

On the radio play by play (yeah I take a radio and listen to it at the park) the one announcer mentioned that someone else who had an unassisted triple play, and there have ever been 14 in MLB history, just happened to be in the stands scouting for some NL team (I think the Cards) for upcoming interleague play.

Yeah, it was Ron Hansen from the Phillies, who pulled one off against the Tribe in '68. What a coincidence. I don't have the stats handy, but IIRC, the unassisted triple play is the rarest achievement in baseball.

Meanwhile the Tribe is scuffling along mightly, the Rays are in 1st in the AL East, and Chipper is still hitting > .400. Personally, I think the Redz and Jay Bruce are gonna have something to say in the NL Central. Just a hunch...

Check Stub Hub, f00. Bleacher seats were available for <$100. I was looking for tix several week back for the last weekend series vs. the O's, and decent outfield bleacher seats were ~$50. Seats along the lines in the OF were >$100, tho. Unfortunately I have an idiot friend who is responsible for getting the tix, and he's still working on it. Flights booked? Check. Hotel reservations made? Check. BoSox tix bought? Check. NYY tix bought? Negative. :saywhat:

And the Red Sox finally gave up on him. They pay him to leave, lose 2 prospects and get a guy who isn't on par with Manny. They won't even make the playoffs. Tampa and the MFY from the AL East. :flame:

I wish. I'm headed to Hilton Head Labor Day week to visit Mom. Trip to NYC is 9/19-9/23. I used SH for this trip since I don't have any baseball fan connections in the area, and NJtard didn't offer me tix. ;) :p Plus, it's a gauge for the market @ least. With their renewed push for the playoffs, I suspect the $$$ will go up (which means I'm screwed with my Hoosier buddy). :(

Sorry guys, for the last 10 years I've needed to be pretty opportunistic re Y tx. Hard fo come by, this year worse than most.

But bleacher tickets are usually available for walk up early, except for the Sox or other key games. Bleachers are $12-14. Dando your big problem is the Yanks are in TO and Bal while you are in town. :p

Daddy goes to Yankee Stadium tomorrow and Fenway on Monday.

Caught a story about Steve Goodman this AM on Today. He wrote this before he died of Luekemia back in '84 and the Cubbies just started playing it recently after a Cubbies W:

He also did this Classic back in '83:

Almost makes me sad that the Dodgers are gonna take out the Cubbies and go to the WS. ;)

I've said it many many times - Ned Yost made Dusty Baker look like a managerial genius. If Sveum had this team all year, I think they would be ahead of my Cubs.

I just don't know what to say anymore. The first few innings were painful - hell the whole game was - but with less than 10 games left I have to enjoy what baseball I have left.

There's Badger football and basketball. By the time March Madness comes around we have spring training for baseball. :) With no Champ Car I've channeled all of my "sports emotion" to baseball.
