Last to jump on the prequel bandwagon, the movie follows Kirk's first missions with Enterprise.
They better not end up on a lava planet with some whinny, younger version of Khan.

Meet the new crew, Not the same as the old crew:

Simon Pegg as Scotty
Good choice. If zombies or crooked cops show up, he'll handle it.
I half expect his partner, Nick Frost, from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to pop up.

Not sure what to think of this. I've been underwhelmed by the last few Trek movies. I doubt the 'real trekkies' will be fond of movie about the original cast of characters. I actually enjoyed the last series, Enterprise, but it seemed most of the trekkies hated it.

This might last a week in the theaters. Scrapping it right now would save a lot of money.

Nimoy messes with Texas. Lives to tell the tale.

Sci-fi enthusiasts in Austin, Texas turned up for [1982's Wrath of Khan] only to find Nimoy introducing the first public showing of [the new Star Trek film].

The film was given a six minute standing ovation and one filmgoer said fans were "crying they were so happy."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7989146.stm/

That's pretty cool. But I wonder how much of the clapping was for 'Spock', and how much was for the movie. 'Better than Wrath of Khan'...fascinating.

I'll believe that when I see it. I expect the special effects to be much improved, but Wrath is solid everywhere else.

Yep, loud praise from all quarters and an IMDB score is currently an 8.6 with nearly 10,000 voting which is very strong. Looks like a big win for J.J. Abram and a reboot for the franchise. Always nice to see something done well, especially a prequal.

That movie was everything it needed to be and more to completely rescue a completely stale franchise.

I saw it last week in IMAX. Pretty nicely done. It's been a long time between passable Trek films, so I was pleasantly surprised.

BTW, I couldn't believe the amount of griping on the innertubes about some of the less-gigantic IMAX screens. Good grief, do you really feel like you're getting ripped off if you pay to see a 70mm print that's not projected at twice the size of the 35mm showing next door?

Netflix dropped this off in Blu-Ray this past Tuesday. it had a familiar 'feel', so I looked up director J.J. Abrams on imdb and bingo...that's it...he wrote the screen play for Armageddon. I think Star Trek has that over the top Armageddon feel to it, but without the thick layer of cheese. I enjoyed how well paced it was... the guy who did Transformers 2 should take note! Which considering that Abrams mostly works in television, it makes since that his movie pacing is well done. The plot was a good balance of simple but yet geeky (what 'Trekie' doesn't break out in a sweat at the mention of time travel and alternate realities). But they didn't over complicate it so that it frustrates the casual viewer. Very fun movie. I hope the next one is done as well and it doesn't take 7 years for it to come out.

WHY?

Also, lessee, typecast as J.T. Kirk and Jack Ryan? Holy crap, that'd be great for an actor. Would he get any time off to do some Theatre to get his art-chick fix?

Guess hollywood IS running out of ideas. Gee lates remake a movie that was done just a scant 10-15 years ago.

I am not supposed to see any remakes of 80's or 90's films until at least around 2025 or so.

I'm mixed on the idea of remaking Clancy. Personally, I'd love to see them actually make a two or three edition version of "HfRO" that ACTUALLY FOLLOWED THE STORY LINE.

Just a hint there, guys...

But I'm still waiting for a TV miniseries (HBO, perhaps?) for Red Storm Rising, which I think would kick ass.
