Originally listed as the only piece left of the car. This one has been vigorously picked apart at the other forum. The seller is now back peddling. Granted, the proceeds are going to Alex's foundation but still, this is obviously NOT the cowling off the car Alex had the accident in. Anyone have any idea who this might be selling this. Seems to have team connections.

That's cool. The best finish ever! I remember watching this live at 1 a.m in Europe.

He's changed it again... I'm a little confused on why he would feel the need to "paraphrase" an e-mail rather than copy/paste it...

He/she makes it even more confusing by including remembrances from a couple other team members, one who believes this was off a tribute car to Alex run at Fontana by Casey Mears. :saywhat:

Hmmm....

OK this is an awful picture... it's of Zanardi's crash.

Long story short: no American flag on the cowling.

It would seem the team member who remembered the tribute car driven by Casey Mears at Fontana may have been spot on.

Now the seller will have a lot of cool pictures for his non-Zanardi listing. :)

Just received this from the seller to my response informing her of the originality of the cowling.

Thanks, someone else forwarded them as well. It is Alex's backup car cowling though, we looked up the purchase records. Thanks.

Oooohhhh, Z's backup car, well, that is just like off AZ's car, except that it wasn't. :shakehead

So, it went from being the cowling off his crashed car to being one of probably 100 cowlings Reynard probably pumped out. Uh....ookaaaaay

Yep Casey Mears

Morris Nunn Racing announced this afternoon that 23-year-old American Casey Mears will replace injured Alex Zanardi in the team's No. 66 Pioneer/WorldCom Honda/Reynard beginning with next weekend's Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston.

The Houston event will be the first race for the No. 66 crew after Zanardi was critically injured in the American Memorial 500 at EuroSpeedway Lausitz on Sept. 15. Nunn sent the team home early rather than have them try to compete at England's Rockingham Motor Speedway the following weekend in the aftermath of the tragic accident, which caused both of Zanardi's legs to be amputated above the knee. He is still hospitalized in Berlin.

Despite Zanardi's injuries, which thankfully he has survived, the team knows it must go on.

"Obviously, we've got a very close eye on how things are progressing with Alex's recovery," said Nunn. "Apparently all the thoughts and prayers people keep sending his way are working, because he is in relatively good spirits and doctors expect a full recovery, aided with the use of artificial legs.

"Alex's wife, Daniela, has strongly urged us to continue with the Pioneer/WorldCom car. And although judgment, being the better part of valor, led us to withdraw the car last weekend, we are looking to come back strong at Houston with young American Casey Mears."

It comes under the worst of circumstances, but this is still a great opportunity for Mears, the son of off-road racing champion and two-time Indy 500 starter Roger Mears and the nephew of four-time Indy 500 winner and three-time CART champion Rick Mears. A veteran of the Dayton Indy Lights series and Indy Racing League, Mears has been considered one of the more promising young American drivers ready to make the next step to the big time. A one-off outing at California Speedway last year with Team Rahal was his Champ Car debut, and he finished a very creditable fourth. That performance, plus strong showings in the Lights races at Houston (winner), Laguna Seca (third) and California (fourth) – three of the four final stops for the 2001 CART FedEx Series Championship – and his existing relationship with sponsor WorldCom, convinced Nunn that Mears was the man for the job.

"Casey's experience at those three events was a big plus for him in our search for a driver," Nunn said. "Plus, he already has a strong relationship with our sponsor WorldCom, and it's a great opportunity for us to showcase a young American driver."

Naturally, Mears is thrilled with the chance to get back into a Champ Car, but this is not the way he wanted it to happen.

"First of all, I just want to say I was shocked, along with the rest of the racing universe, at what happened to Alex," he said. "Alex has an incredible amount of fans and loyal supporters, and I am definitely one of the biggest. With that, I am very thankful for this tremendous opportunity. Fortunately, we get to start this run at racetracks that I am very familiar with. I'm looking forward to driving for Mo Nunn, and I just hope I can help carry on the legacy of Alex Zanardi."

Yep Casey Mears

yea, but why would they be putting on the american flag at the next race?

i wouldn't bid on this thing, multiple copies, no proof it was even on the car at any point or made the trip over the pond. I'm not paying over 1000 bucks for something Casey Smears drove at 120mph on a street circuit with 12, 90 degree angle turns.

 on trying to profit off an injury. bush league if mo nunn truly asked to put this up for sale.

yea, but why would they be putting on the american flag at the next race? Because that race was October 7th 2001, less than one month after September 11, 2001. Does the date ring a bell?

OK smarty pants, why the Italian flag? ;)

It would seem that Alex's rememberance in the paraphrased email along with the team member note is probably what the real deal was. At Pioneers request, the flags were put on at Fontana as a salute type deal to both Alex and 9-11.

I think. :gomer:

As many times as this story has been changed by the seller, who's to say this cowling wasn't even on the car drove in the race but instead, off Casey's backup?

Now how much would you give??

I got a little bottle with some clear liquid in it. Supposed to be Kanaan's tears although they look more like Helios. I'll trade ya for your mirror. I'd mount it in me moped.
