new kind of motorsport soon could be flying into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Speedway officials are in discussions with the Red Bull Air Race World Series, a 5-year-old airplane race circuit that combines the intrigue of a high-wire circus act, thrills of an alpine ski race, and cutting-edge technology of Formula One auto racing.

“Indianapolis is in our sites, to say the least,” said series spokeswoman Maddy Stephens. “The city’s deep motorsports roots and a historical backdrop like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway make it a fantastic location.”

An air race could land at the Speedway as soon as 2009, Stephens added.

Red Bull Air Races?

Actually it's an aerial version of autoX -- cone bashing in the sky.

Real air racing takes place on a closed course with more than one plane in the air at a time.

Reno :)

Am I underestimating the size of IMS or are they going to tie the airplanes to a string?

If Dallaras can fly there I think that planes can too.

I could supply Tony with a "full field" of 33 for less than $1500.

Do they actually stage these races in the middle of population centers? Are they hoping to clear some real estate for their IndyWorld project?

They like to stage the city "races" over bodies of water -- a river or a lake or a bay usually. The White is too narrow so they might fly in the Eagle Creek Reservoir area. If memory serves there is a small general aviation airstrip there as well.

Here they are in London. One step away from re-locating the Led Zepplin show. I'm glad I don't fill out their insurance forms...

And even though this one's in the middle of nowhere, this is very lucky boy.

I have no clue what Joiey C*hitwood is thinking. Cam attended one in Aussie and it appeared it was over a river, bay something like that. IMS is not near any water, and that Eagle Creek Reservoir is a few miles away. no way the City (its a city park) gets in on that, and if they did race at Eagle Creek park, why would IMS be involved anyway? They sure did a great job promoting F1, right? :tony:

There's no airstrip @ IMS, but Indy Intl is not too far, and that little strip by Eagle Creek might work I suppose.

I have a picture in my head of Tony playing with model airplanes on his desk right now. And its not good.

They are pretty cool from what I see on TV. I imagine it would be cool to see in person, if you like airshows and such.

They have them over larger rivers, but they also have them in pretty out of the way places. One was held on the grouds of some castle in England, one over the river in some E. Yuro city in Budapest(?).

I am pretty sure our FAA would take a dim view of having this happen over any kind of populated area. I mean, its not like you and your buddies can just decide saturday to go hop in the 172's and bust out an air show over the house :-)

Billionaire or not I can't see how TG could afford the insurance when just any failure would land the plane in a residential block.

In Speedtucky Indianer, this may not be such a bad thing.

Yep, there is an airport right off 38th and Dandy Trail. The reservoir is about a mile or so from my house.

I've seen those plane races on TV and as pc said, not really airplane races. More like those doggie obstacle course runs..

BS CC-like 3-day total for sure. And how many bought a ticket? I've counted the rows in the bleachers and there is no freakin' way there are even half a million seats there. I sure the promoters lost their ass. :D

The insurance industry will never approve low-altitude, urban air racing in the United States. Never.

Great question.

The Cleveland National Airshow, which is now held at Burke Lakefront Airport, started a long time ago (its one of the oldest US shows) as air races at what is now called Cleveland Hopkins. A few years ago they had a story that they moved the air races to Burke when, and I am not making this up, when one of the racing planes came down and trough the roof of a house into its bathroom killing a pregnant woman who was in the john at the time.
