NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Company will unveil a new special edition Mustang, designed to commemorate the 1968 Steve McQueen movie 'Bullitt,' at next week's Los Angeles Auto Show.

This new version will be a 2008, marking 40 years since the movie and the Mustang that the modern version largely emulates.

Engineers modeled the car's exhaust note on the engine sound heard in the original movie, based on a specially mastered DVD, Ford said. :gomer:

Maybe Dodge will put out a General Lee Charger complete with welded doors and cardboard cutouts of Bo and Luke for your backseat. Sans rebel flag on roof, of course!

Their second generation Bullitt edition. :gomer: iffic.

Now all they need to do is reissue the Mustang II and make a bullitt edition of that. :tony:

During the height of Farrah mania in '76/'77, the daughter of the family that lived next door was a flight attendant (were they still called stewardesses at that time?) who had the Farrah hair style and a Mustang II (white w/blue stripes just like Farrah's in Charlie's' Angels) and she would wash it in a Farrah red bikini every once in awhile. Amazing how I can still vividly recall that, being that I was about 9 or 10. :)

Farrahs swimsuit (in the famous poster anyway) was a revealing red one-piece Speedo though.

Correct your mental image. :D

Well, if you neighbor was in a bikini, good for her (and you)

So how do they "tune" an exhaust note to a digital audio file? Do you think they went so far as to put them through wave analyzing software in conjunction with CAD/CAM software to change the shape of the exhaust in a virtual environment or do you think it was more like engineer Bob took a torch to the Y pipe and squeezed with a pair of channel locks until engineer Tom, listening to the DVD said "that's it right there, stop squeezing!!". Hmmm. Either way, it's...:gomer:

She had a "de-stinkified" pet skunk too. Every so often she would come over when I was outside and ask if I wanted to play with her skunk.

True story. :)

She'd be in her early 50's now. Probably married a pilot and had 3 kids and got fat.

Time sucks.

I worked a project with Harley Davidson in the 90s to design and build their next generation engine. Europe was imposing noise level restrictions and they were faced with losing the market unless they could quiet the engines. At the same time, they didn't want to lose a big part of their brand and reason people buy Harleys, namely the loud "potato-potato-potato" engine note.

They analyzed all the components that contributed to the engine note, including components in the valve train, transmission and drive train then with computer models figured out what contributed to decible levels and what contributed to the qualities of what people expect a Harley to sound like. They then used the model to design the bike from the ground up to be below the European threshold but retain the Harley qualities.

In other words, it wasn't easy and took lots of time and money.

I have read somewhere the mustang sound was really a GT40 IV. The 390 sound was not good enough for Yates.:\

The current Mustang was a great move when they made it. It sold a lot more cars than most people expected and now they're just trying to get as much as they can out of it. Coming in late to the same market (GM, Chrysler) would be stupid.

It is true that Ford has a serious problem with their U.S. lineup. Boring. Hopefully the Korean facelift that they've given the outdated U.S. Focus was two far down the pipe before Mulally came in and they'll soon have some decent small cars like the euro Fiesta and Focus.

Nothing is more boring than Honda's line. Detroit is just easy to dump on. :)

I'd much rather dump on Honda and Toyota, but the Civic Si and S2000 are more interesting than anything in Ford's lineup. It pains me to say that because I love the idea of a Mustang but other than going like a scalded cat, it's not particularly enjoyable to drive.

Replays of 40yr old glory are fun and sad at the same time. It's like an elderly relative at a family gathering reliving the glory of his younger days.

Since it quite obvious that there are some folks at Ford that actually like cars and have an appreciation of why some they built in the 60's were important maybe there's a glimmer of a chance we'll see them release some current models that bring that same level of innovation to the market.

It's getting late in the game, but I'm still hoping these companies can get it right before it's over for good.

Sad too that so much of the market is too young to even remember these cars in their original form. Another part of it sees that these are either poor imitations of the origninal performers or that even the originals were poor by today's standards. The Bandit Firebird was a pig compared to the pre 72 birds without all the pollution controls.

Sad too is that when these cars originally came out it was a time when people felt we could do anything. We were going to the moon, cars were forever going faster, science and technology was going to take us to places unknown. I fear now people are wishing for these throwbacks because they don't see hope and ambition looking forward and find more happiness looking backwards.
