Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti will make stock car debut Friday at ARCA race with Ganassi
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Writer

October 2, 2007

Dario Franchitti's much-anticipated move to stock cars will begin Friday with an ARCA race at Talladega Superspeedway, The Associated Press has learned.

The 2007 Indy 500 winner and IndyCar Series champion has agreed to a multiyear deal to replace David Stremme in the No. 40 Dodge for NASCAR's Chip Ganassi Racing, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity because the deal had yet to be announced.

An official announcement is expected Wednesday at Ganassi's race shop in North Carolina. Ganassi also fields Nextel Cup cars for rookie Juan Pablo Montoya, another former open-wheel star, and Reed Sorenson.

Ganassi said Sunday at Kansas Speedway that he was close to a deal with Franchitti's open-wheel team, Andretti Green Racing, to get the 34-year-old Scot out of his contract, which ends Dec. 1.

Andretti Green Racing announced Tuesday it has released Dario Franchitti from his driver agreement.

NASCAR wants the world...trust me, they say America is the only thing they are interested in, but it's BS. They won't do it without teams like Gannassi putting JPM and Franchittitis in the cars.
I can picture the Ashly cam during Daytona. The NASCAR kissing garbage pouring from her mouth will be nauseating. I expect to hear that she thought IndyCars where too dangerous thus the switch.

One good thing about this. We will not have to put up with the annual Dario to CC rumors any more.

Mr. Judd is a *****...........he can't handle the pressure of being a professional test pilot so he runs away to a cozy cab.

Yep. She is nauseating. I've always liked the mom the best anyway. My friend says Ashley was one of the hottest chicks he's ever seen. Yuck.

One possiblity is Dega + ARCA Pilots = dangerous. Lots of em get in over their head and turn right. A friend in the NASCAR press corp says the photographers refer to it as the American Racing Coroners Association.

Mostly. Sorta like if Mansell or Zanardi had run a couple of AIS races before starting their CART careers. And like M&B said- ARCA's safety record makes NASCAR's look impressive.

I'm watching 'NASCAR Happy Hour' and I agree, some hayseed named Harvey will keep normal people from watching NASCAR.

They are focusing a lot on Frankitty and JV. Add in Speed, AJ, Hornish and JPM...this **** is gettin' sureal .

Ripped from the ARCA site:

2007 Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti made his stock car debut in Chip Ganassi's Dodge, and finished 17th.

"I gained a huge amount of experience learning from the start of the race," said Franchitti. "The first part of the race I was drafting like an Indy car. I was getting up behind people and then I figured out it was more important who was pushing you than who is in front of you. Once I figured that out I was getting into side drafting and everything started to come together.

"It was a lot of fun out there. I'm disappointed with the result, but what I've learned, I don't think you can put a price on it. I learned so much today. I'm looking at the long game. I'm looking at next year. From that point of view, I'm very happy. I'm a little disappointed because I think the Target guys deserved a better result than that."

I'll try to remember to post the complete results before I walk the schnauzer in the morning.

First ever race on an oval or in a cab and Speed qualifies and finishes in 7th.
That speaks volumes about ARCA.

You have got to be kidding me...

Team Red Bull on Friday confirmed that it plans to to field former Formula One driver Scott Speed for a full season in the Automobile Racing Club of America series in 2008. Speed will drive the No. 2 Toyota for Eddie Sharp racing and Patrick Donahue will serve as Speed’s crew chief. Red Bull may consider entering Speed in some NASCAR events, depending on his progress during the season. "One of the great things about ARCA is that you have a whole field full of young guys like me just trying to make a name in this sport," Speed said. "It’s hard to judge the level of competition I’ll face next year, but that’s just part of the fun."

Hey, an F1 wanker beats the IRL Chump and Mindy 500 Whiner in his first oval race. Is there no small solace in that?Comparing Speed and Franchitti's results seems more fair than comparing either to the rest of the ARCA field.

Anyway, the race was boring and I don't normally watch ARCA. I feel sorry that Scott will be stuck there for a whole year in 2008. I think he should do it part time along with a Busch schedule.

I'm really looking forward to the big race on Sunday if Jaques makes the race. Qualifying starts at 1 PM ET on Speed this afternoon.

So there he was on pit road at Talladega Superspeedway on Thursday morning, about to take his first stock car laps in an ARCA series practice. An official strolled to his car and leaned into the window.

"You speak English?"

Franchitti was flabbergasted, befuddled and amused as his crew howled over the team radio.

Back when the likes of Cale Yarborough, the Allisons and Petty Sr. were running, the technology was current, the tracks had character and the restrictions weren't so ridiculous cab racing was worth the occasional look. Whatever, trish. If you can't see the difference, you are in denial.

NASCAR is professional wrestling on wheels. The experience NASCAR offers appeals to those who are primarily interested in the immediate sensory aspects of racing. Naturally it attracts those who do not really care to think too much about what they are watching.

Which, by the way, is why the IRL and spec racing in general, including Champ Car, suck.

Could well be, but my point is all race series and crowds are not the same. CART, ALMS, F1 are very different than NASCAR. And NASCAR changes as you go south. I have been to Michigan, Bristol, Martinsville, Rockingham and Darlington. The homophobia and ugly behavior increases as you drive south, there is no doubt about it.
