Alex and Jon put the hurt on the field again Friday at Watkins Glen - leading essentially flag-to-flag from Jon's sixth consecutive pole. That's their series-record-tying sixth of the season, four more than anyone else - and yet they're STILL four points out of the title lead. Stupid NASCAResque points system :saywhat: :thumdown:

Two more races. We'd like to win them both - that would assure us the championship.

By any sane point system that actually rewards winners, you guys would be in the lead, but you wouldn't be running away with it.

Congrats Travis. As much as the the close racing is a nice feature, sometimes I stop and think if fans are selling themselves short. Nascaresque is the word.

Yeah, beating Scott Pruett, Max Angelelli, Pat Long, Jorg Bergmeister, Memo Gidley, Jan Magnussen, Marc Goossens and Bill Auberlen (with an anchor) is nothing to be proud of. The spec may not be the sexiest but to denigrate their performance in a largely talented (and funded) field is ignorant.

Tell ya what. Ask any of those drivers where they would like to be. Driving an Audi R10, Porsche Spyder or one of the Acura LMP2's or a scrubbing bubble (thanks nrc!). Bet you one year's salary that every one of those drivers you mentioned would take a pay cut to drive one of the LMP1's or 2's. Bank on it.

Doesn't change the fact that beating them regularly is at least somewhat impressive. Especially in relatively equal equipment (compared to ALMS anyway).

I love ALMS, the cars are so much cooler. But Grand Am has found a way to get a full field out every time they race, and the Rolex24 is incredible, there's no field quite like it in US motorsport.

Yes, they're ugly.

Moot point, since you can't get paid driving an LMP unless you're on the factory teet. I don't like GA, but at least non-factory drivers can get paid there.

Bet you one year's salary that they wouldn't. Alex and Jon are both married with young children. They're supporting their families by race driving - not out for a lark bankrolled by daddy.

Furthermore, they're both driving a competitive car which has a strong chance to win any given race. Unless you're in an Audi P1 or a Penske P2, you have no chance at all in the ALMS. Why would they want to putter around the back, serving as little more than lap traffic for the factories?

Unless you're in a Gainsco Riley, Suntrust Riley or Ganassi Riley, you have no chance at all in the Grand-Am.

Those pesky Alex Job guys managed to pull one off at Laguna Seca, though... they have had absolutely atrocious luck since then. And MATT ALHADEFF, PRO RACING DRIVER EXTRAORDINAIRE won at Homestead...

But yeah, since then, it's been just about all us. :laugh:

That has nothing to do with my point and is most likely wrong anyway. The drivers I know who are still active look at or are in Grand-Am for earning a living, ALMS is an afterthought, something that would be nice to do if an unlikely paid drive became available and could be dovetailed in with their main ride.

Do you think Terry Borcheller would rather be in a DP or sharing a 911 with Tim Pappas? I prefer ALMS but I can recognize that Grand Am has a deeper field and is certainly more competitive whether or not the Riley gives me a boner.

Hey, there has to be some Little Children of the Poor/Retirement Home road course rubbin' and racin' someplace. The France Mafia knows how to do that kind of thing -- remember, they took care of Michael Waltrip when he was still 0-for-300 in NASCRAP starts. Gurney the Lesser and Fogarty the Who Knows What are a couple of lucky smucks since will both cash checks for faking it the rest of their careers. Who shows up first at Watkins Glen or Sonoma as a "road course specialist"?

I know I've never raced, but what I have experienced in autocrossing and through friends of mine who club race, is enough for me to know that pro racing is terribly difficult stuff and alot of you look like fools by making it sound easy.

And FTG, Grand-Am's niche is wealthy privateer owners and non-factory supported pro teams. Care to finally explain what Champ Car's niche is?

I was there Friday with the boys and about 12 other people.

Foggy and Gurney had everyone completely covered. Maybe it was the set up and maybe they had 100 extra HP but it looked like they just drove the wheels off it. The race for p2-5 was pretty entertaining though.

I'm no Grand Am fan, but I've seen Jon Fogarty drive a racecar more than a few times from the seat of my own racecar. The guy has a huge amount of natural ability, a racer's mind, and he knows how to win.

There's a reason he acquitted himself well against Ricardo Zonta & Sebastien Bourdais at the Newman-Haas test awhile ago.

All forms of racing are niche sports. NASCAR would be over the moon if 10% of the US population cared about it. The fact is >90% of the US population don't give a damn about any kind of cars/bikes going in various forms of circles. CC's niche is the people that like it, the same for goes IRL, ALMS, Grand AM, funny cars and lawnmowers.

Yeah, they did it again... from pole, with Gurney making a textbook inside pass for the lead on David Donohue on the second-to-last-lap for the win.

We're one point up in the title fight heading into the last race in two weeks. :)

Man, Gurney and Donohue. My favorite year of Trans Am!:) I didn't want to be the first to post on this race. Glad it was you. I was going to title it "Break Up The Gainsco Team!" (LEFT foot braking, correct?:D)
