Scary that I now believe Ank to be one of the most responsible and stable people ever to work at NASA.

They've all got big balls to ride that thing. I'd lap Texas in a Vision Car before I'd get in that POS.

Ever see the Top Gear (BBC) show where they painted up a pick-up truck, a Caddie and a Camero with the words, "I'm Bi", NASCAR SUCKS etc and drove from Florida to Texas. Or attempted to anyway. Somewhere east of the Big Easy in Alabama they were attacked by some chick at a gas bar and then she sicks her inbred children on them.

Beautiful launch in HD.

About the drinking thing..... Has there ever been a confirmation on the story? IIRC it was a single anonymous source. I think it was likely BS.

Aviation Week said:

At least twice, astronauts were allowed to fly after flight surgeons and other astronauts warned they were so drunk they posed a flight-safety risk, an aviation weekly reported Thursday, citing a special panel studying astronaut health.

The independent panel also found "heavy use of alcohol" before launch that was within the standard 12-hour "bottle-to-throttle" rule, according to Aviation Week & Space Technology, which reported the finding on its Web site.

A NASA official confirmed that the health report contains claims of alcohol use by astronauts before launch, but said the information is based on anonymous interviews and is unsubstantiated. The official didn't want to be named because NASA plans a news conference Friday to discuss the panel's findings.

This is what NASA has to say:

The first phase of a NASA inquiry has found no evidence that any astronauts were drinking alcohol heavily before liftoff, NASA chief Michael Griffin said Wednesday.

...

An independent panel of medical experts alleged last month that two astronauts were drunk just before they were scheduled to rocket into orbit.

One was about to ride a Russian spaceship to the International Space Station. The other was supposed to make a shuttle flight but tried to fly a NASA training jet home after the launch was delayed.

The panel did not confirm the incidents, nor did it specify how long ago they took place, who the impaired astronauts were or whether they flew.

Wouldn't it be required to be drunk to ride in one of those things? :)

I have a hard time believing somebody on the shuttle would have had anything to drink within 12 hours of a flight. Aren't they getting prepped for the flight during most if not all of that time?

An independent panel of medical experts alleged last month that two astronauts were drunk just before they were scheduled to rocket into orbit. this is the part I'm inclined to believe, everyone's a damned lush at the center, they make me look a charter member of MADD. but who knows, could be b.s., could be something they don't want to confirm publicly

You would think that it wouldn't be all that difficult for NASA to meet with the doctors, find out which astronauts it was and then conduct a similar investigation.

On a side note, the headline is a little over the top. I'm not sure what every member of the crew does on the Shuttle or the Soyuz, but I doubt they all actually "fly" the spacecraft. With that said, one would expect better professionalism from an astronaut (and really any professional to not show up for work drunk/impaired).

What the hell is the big deal with launching drunk? It's not like you gotta steer the thing... Plus, you're expected to pee your huggies, so what gives? It's pretty much a strap in and hang on deal.

Assuming that wasn't all staged, I think it was, how far did they have to drive to get the reaction they wanted? If someone tried a similar stunt in reverse, and American crew driving around England with derogatory slogans about some soccer team what would happen, did you ever see a soccer riot? If they don't like the US they don't have to come here.

Nobody gets too riled up about about German jokes, even though that was 60 years ago. I imagine if the south had gotten rid of slavery without a fight, there would be no redneck jokes.

Anyone have a guess why the Teacher-in-Space flight took place before most of the country has started school?

I have nieces in AZ that started the 15th and friends in NC that start this week, but in cooler climates school doesn't start until after Labor Day.

On another note I watched the press conference with the crew last night. The Canadian astronaut (I should recall his name) was really refreshing in the awe he experienced on the flight and his spacewalks. Reminded me of the old days of NASA.

Glad too they are home safe.
