Plane Crashes Into Central Fla. Homes; 5 Killed, 3 Critically Injured
Witnesses: Boy Was On Fire, Running Around

A Cessna plane crashed into two homes in Sanford, Fla., Tuesday, killing two children, three adults and critically injuring three others inside a house.

Officials said the twin-engine plane was on a flight from Daytona to Lakeland at about 8:30 a.m. when it crashed into the homes at the Preserve at Lake Monroe subdivision in Sanford.

"(The pilot) was coming in at a bank like he was trying to make a turn and he went straight down into the houses," a witness said at the scene.

Officials said three adults and two children were killed in the crash, including Dr. Bruce Kennedy, husband of International Speedway Corp. official Lesa France Kennedy.

There were fatalities reported in both houses, Seminole County fire official Leanne Ross said at a news conference. She also said there could be more victims.

Family Critically Burned

A woman, her husband and their 10-year-old son were burned and critically injured when the plane slammed into their home.

Witnesses told Local 6 News that the boy was on fire and running around.

An investigator from the Sanford Fire Department said the boy had burns over 80 to 90 percent of his body.

A 4-year-old boy remained unaccounted for Tuesday afternoon, Local 6 reported.

Plane Left NASCAR Hangar

Kennedy, a plastic surgeon from Daytona Beach, and at least one other unidentified person aboard the plane were killed in the crash. Kennedy, who was piloting the plane, was the the son-in-law of NASCAR's late Bill France Jr.

The Daytona Beach News Journal cited at least four anonymous sources who said Kennedy was practicing for his pilot's license.

The plane was registered to Competition Liaison Bureau Inc. of Daytona Beach. Local 6 said the company has connections to NASCAR.

Local 6's Tarik Minor said the plane took off from a NASCAR hangar.

Witnesses said the plane was trying to land at Orlando Sanford International Airport when it crashed about 1 mile north of the airport.

A Lake Mary firefighter was injured while trying to extinguish flames at the crash scene.

The neighborhood where the plane crashed was evacuated because of explosions.

Some reports of smoke in cockpit too.

Nasty looking scene and anything involving kids is twice as hard. There will be critical incident stress debriefing available for those affected including emergency responders.

PIO for fire department did a nice job considering how hard they were pushing her for details she didn't have or couldn't release.

Major bummer for anyone that had anything to do with this one. Just reading the details was more than enough for me...:(
