Quite honestly - I dont see how the drunken, Jr can actually fit into one of the waggens..... but then again, this is Sammich's operation and I am sure they had experience back in the day of widening them thar Coyote tubs or the Lolas before AJ decided he wasnt gettin any more of them special motors or fire extinguishers that helped his chances back then....
Sad deal for Manning.... he actually showed some decent performance on one of the road courses earlier before he ran out of talent passing one of the true road course wankers..... didnt he ?

Special FutILity shout-out to Tony George for presenting the most unimaginably weakest field in Indy 500 history and having only 26 driver/car combos on track this week. With no TV and Indiana changing time zones the destruction of even more traditions have commenced: Happy hour is neither happy nor in the right hour. Great job Tony, you suck.

11 14 Manning, Tex 224.054 The special fire extinguisher bottles arrived?
14 39 Andretti, Michael 223.998 Sandbagging of just cashing the check?
18 22 Foyt IV, A. J. 223.561 A chip off the old blockhead, for sure!
23 50 Unser, Jr., Al 221.457 No assault charge, no DUI, no speeding ticket.
24 25 Roth, Marty 220.104 Earns "Fastest Canadian" award.
26 23 Duno, Milka 218.640 Took a ride on the wild side.
The Weird Bastardized Version of Pole Day 3:52 ET
The provisional pole sitter is Kanaan. WTF is a provisional pole at Indy? Either you are fastest or somebody just kicked your ass out of P1.
1 Tony Kanaan (11) 39.7815 226.236
17 AJ Foyt IV (22) 40.4598 222.443
19 Darren Manning (14) 40.5566 221.912
22 Al Unser Jr (50) 41.0791 219.090
23 Marty Roth (25) 41.1046 218.954
The usual suspects have reverted to form and are just diddling around because they don't have a chance of posting a Top 11 time today. Looks like they'll all accept mediocrity and hope for a Top 22 time on Sunday.
Top 11? Top 22? How NASCAR lite can you get?

Notes from the crock that is now Pole Day.
1 3 Castroneves, Helio D/H/F 225.817 Pole Day
13 20 Carpenter, Ed D/H/F 222.685 Pole Day 'Bumped'
17 22 Foyt IV, AJ D/H/F 221.467 Pole Day 'Bumped'
19 14 Manning, Darren D/H/F 222.656 Pole Day 'Failed Attempt'
20 20 Carpenter, Ed D/H/F 222.652 Pole Day 'Failed Attempt'
Under the pre 2005 IRL/Vision rules Mr. Ed, IV, and Tex Manning would all be in the field with mediocre but probably safe qualifying times. Castroneves would not be on the pole since he completed two qualification runs with the same chassis. Under the old rules the qualified car had to be withdrawn from the race before a driver could make a second run for pole or a more secure position in the field with another chassis. Now the same car gets three attempts each day, and a completed qualifying run can be "withdrawn" by the entrant. Sam "The Ovalmeister" Hornish made three complete runs with one chassis, but had major bobbles during the 2nd and 3rd runs that kept him from advancing in the field. He is in P5 with the time for his 3rd run. Rick Mears must be shaking his head.
22 50 Unser Jr, Al D/H/F 40.9791 219.624 Practiced, no attempt to qualify.
23 25 Roth, Marty D/H/F 41.1046 218.954 Practiced, no attempt to qualify.
Milka Duno did not practice.

Qualifying Day 2 1:20 PM ET
Our heroes start filling the middle of the field.
14 Carpenter, Special Ed (20) 223.495 2nd day
15 Manning, Tex (14) 223.471 2nd day
17 Unser, Jr. Al (50) 220.963 2nd day
xx Roth, Marty (25) 219.889 "bumped"
How embarrassing for Al Unser Jr.
Here is a guy with 2 CART titles, 2 Indy 500 wins, is recognized as one of the all time greats in IROC, who has won the 24 hours of Daytona and ran at the sharp in of the grid during selected NASCAR races AND been considered and tested for a front line F1 seat
to be bumped by the likes of Jon Herb..........
Is getting killed in an IRL car a proper epitath for an Indy Legend????
2nd Day Qualifying -- Final Results
14 20 Carpenter, Ed 223.495 2nd Day
15 [14 Manning, Tex 223.471 2nd Day
18 22 Foyt IV, AJ 222.413 2nd Day
30 50 Unser Jr, Al 220.963 2nd Day Bumped sic transit gloria Indy :(

The days of "waving off" an attempt are gone?

Another Andretti slows on the backstretch...
From http://www.jayski.com
UPDATE: Two-time IndyCar Series Champion Panther Racing announced it will enter a car in the 91st Running of the Indianapolis 500 for John Andretti, who will be making his return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after 12-year hiatus from IndyCar racing. Andretti, who last competed in the ‘500’ in 1994, will have his #33 entry sponsored by Camping World and RVs.com. He will join new teammates Vitor Meira and Kosuke Matsuura on the historic 2.5-mile oval for practice Wednesday. Andretti’s yellow Camping World Panther Dallara Honda will attempt to qualify for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing this coming Saturday, when spots 22-33 are available.

I predict a "promotors choice" with no time/no speed. If these guys keep running out of talent and chrashing before field filling day, there may not be enough cars to go around for the helmet carring has-beens to fill the field.

Update on Gregoire's classic gearbox first wall hit.
Stephan Gregoire was taken to a hospital Thursday after his car crashed during practice for the Indianapolis 500.
Gregoire’s injuries were not believed to be serious, but Chastain Motorsports officials said he was undergoing precautionary CAT scans of his neck and back.
Gregoire was third-fastest of the session when his No. 77 Chastain Motorsports Panoz-Honda spun and crashed shortly after 1 p.m. He walked from the car and appeared to be unhurt. The car, which struck the wall with the rear end, sustained moderate damage.
Gregoire is expected to return to the track later Thursday if his injuries aren’t deemed serious, team officials said.
SpeedTV.com will have more details as they become available.

A little backround, Boat bought his own Indy Lights car and actually took part in a few Indy Lights races in order to gain some rear engine experience. He realized he did not have enough cash, nor did he attract anybody else's cash, so he went back to what he did best, which was run Midgets and Sprints.
When the split came, for him it was an oppertunity to drive rear engine cars for little cash outlay. He didn't suck that bad, and didn't prang a bunch of cars.
All the while, he was working behind the scenes to build a business, which today is extrememly successful.

Actually, no it isn't.
If you bought into the vision, circa 1994-1996 Billy Boat is exactly what was needed to fix everything that was wrong with Indycar racing.
Jeffy couldn't get into Indycars.
The little guys were being priced out of racing
Lack of American flavored short track racing hero's.
Street races and foreign road racers making up too much of the mix.
Had the IRL actually been the answer to fixing what was wrong with CART*, the IRL would've taken off in popularity, sponsors galore would've come a callin and guys like Stewart, Kahne or Yeley would be running at the brickyard in May, not August. But it wasn't, if failed and when Toyota and Honda knocked on the door Tony threw guys like Boat under the bus along with some other founding teams and fans.
*I'm not suggesting that CART was broken but it did have some problems that needed to be addressed. Tweaking would be better verbage than fixing. Fixing implies there was something broken to begin with, which there wasn't.
One spot still available for TBF.
Fixed that post for ya, Pete. :tony: :saywhat:

I just keep IRL T&S running in the backgroud while I work a bit in the afternoon.
Meanwhile
Chastain withdrew yesterday's qualifying time and sent Moreno back out to (77) Roberto Moreno P/H/F 220.299 Not bad for for an old man in a crappy IRL Panoz/G-Farce.

PJ Jones and team decides they dont have the speed and are going to try agian next year.
So really no bumping on bump day. Jones anf Kite way too far off to even think about making it. Gotta love Honda saying you cant practice because its a leased engine. :tony:

Can someone tell me if I heard this right?
The engine lasts 1,000 miles. Teams that qualify on the second weekend must subtract 500 miles from that total for the race, meaning that they have 500 miles for practice/qualies. Does this mean that teams that qualified last weekend have that 1,000 miles to use as they please and can put in another engine?
Trying to figure out Indy this year is making my head hurt.
Kite is going out for a forelorn hope run just before the gun. His best practice speed is still 5 mph short of bumping Marty.
Kite had nothing. All he managed was a bit more camera time on whatever high number cable outlet ABC dumped late afternoon qualies to for the NBA.
The tears welling in my eyes over one of the greatest ever at the speedway not making the field....Jimmy Kite SUCKS and so does this BS bumpo crap. He's a 4th rate indyloper.
INDY has had another shovel of dirt tossed on it's grave today. PaTHETiC, AMplIFyireD.

They keep reminding us of the 'drama of Indy". Yeah, it WAS dramatic 15 years ago. You dont have to keep reminding us how dramatic it was then because it was self explanatory.

Yeah. there were literally tens of fans pulling for Jimmy, but alas, he didn't have the car to pull it off. I can't believe all these gomers pretending that this is the same I500 that we all grew up with. This will never get better until somebody admits that there is a problem. :tony: :saywhat:

I love the part where they were saying they only had 7.5 miles of practice time left. All part of their very special lease deal from Honda.
Yep, Leo and Tony warned us about this, good thing they formed that racing league to keep it from happening. :saywhat:

Paul D (I expect that would stand for dumbass today) supposedly mortgaged his house among other things, just to get "the best driver at Indy" in "the show".
Sort of ironic that super-sub made it. PDM didn't.

Yeah, what was up with that "One of the greatest drivers of all time at Indy"?
WTF, You're getting Rick Mears to sit in your sled Paul?
I doubt that even Kite was buying into that load of hooey.
Oh my, Jimmy Kite. Today you saw Gomer pride stomped upon again...the once great experiment called the IRL that promised to bring forth sprint car youth and revitalize the 500 with a grass roots approach was beaten down again, this time by an ageless Roberto Moreno.
Special futility nomination goes out to the old lady who was so weak she couldn't pull the track pistol trigger to end the fill day fiasco on time today at Indy. After 3 reloads and a bit of encouragement the gun finally fired at 6:01PM. I'm getting embarassed to even admit I WAS a fan of Indy once. Keep up the great work Tony!

Somebody forgot to edit out Mr. Kite because they can't have four cars in Row 11. Giebler bumped him. The only "traditional" bump of the Month of May.

So how many cars that were entered (not T cars) didn't even make an attempt?
Only article in the Star Ledger on Bump Day was about how Jersey embarassment Chesson was wandering the garage looking for a ride. Plenty of ride to be had if only he had more money.
If Indy is so grand why are the sponsors so shy?
I watched for the last 20 minutes yesterday. I literally saw maybe 10 people in the stands, but I heard the radio comments to Roth saying he would get better TV coverage if he got out of the car and walked down to Kite and asked if he was going to run. Pathetic.:(

I'm just glad that the broadcast partner puts telemetry graphics on the screen for those of us who couldn't guess that the throttle on every car is 100% all the way around the track.

And, Bobby More tossed out an innocent dig too....he had to get used to driving "flat" around there because when he last drove Indy he had to lift...:D
