Geesh. Anyone in Phoenix? Special test to appease Joe "nutjob" Arpaio on noise levels. Four drivers on hand which according to some is half the field. ;)

I have never seen this button. It even says "You may not post attachments" at the bottom of the page. Is it for the Bosses only?

The Phoenix test actually made the morning news in Seattle (KING-5). The only other time you hear about ChampCar up here is for the Portland race, or the "did he live or die" wrecks.

I thought that the "posting attachments" option dumped the pictures on the board's server which is the reason it is shut off for us folk.

yes, it does, and that's probably why. We have a bit more space and bandwidth to work with now so i can probably change it.

Sherriff says race cars pass noise tests (http://www.azcentral.com/sports/speed/articles/0307racecars0307-CP.html)

Three open-wheel race cars shrieked through downtown Phoenix on Tuesday, right past the Maricopa County 911 emergency center.

The noise of the revving engines had onlookers covering their ears.

But inside the command center at First Avenue and Madison Street, visitors were able to talk in a whisper.

The first tests of noise mitigation for the Champ Car World Series coming this fall to Phoenix streets were deemed a success by race promoters, sound experts and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had voiced concern that the racing racket would cripple operations at the 911 center.

But Arpaio said he would reserve final judgment until race day.

"We couldn't hear any of the noise," Arpaio said after the tests. "However, when you have 20 cars racing out there, it might be a little different."

Four tests had been planned for Tuesday, with professional drivers piloting the exotic machines, but the final test was canceled after Arpaio said he was satisfied with the results of the first three.

To control the noise inside the 911 center, sound expert Gary Hardesty of Los Angeles had the windows covered with a heavy rubber matting and thick curtains. Outside, a noise barrier wall made of steel shipping containers was stacked around a corner of the building.

Hardesty monitored the noise levels with high-tech sound-sensing equipment.

"The noise didn't register at all on the equipment," Hardesty said. "We believe there will be no problem with noise."

Grand Prix Arizona is scheduled for Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 on a two-mile course on city streets, with the cars expected to hit speeds as high as 180 mph. The speeds during Tuesday's testing were considerably lower.

Several hundred people, including race fans and office workers from nearby buildings, watched from behind barriers as the colorful race cars roared past in a series of tests that closed off some downtown streets for part of the day.

"In spite of all the noise, they're fun to watch," said Robert Fitzpatrick, a Tempe race fan who came downtown to watch the testing.
