Diapers, buttpads now "baffles in the manifolds" (in canisters!)...guess that's a muffler. Too loud for the street circuits. They'll need 'em when they run Long Beach and Las Vegas. Full roll cages and nerf bars come next.

Since Nismo is too lazy and/or inconsiderate to provide a link :shakehead ...

“We’ve reduced the decibel level by about 4 percent and taken the harshness and shrillness out of the exhaust notes along with the tone, which makes it gentler on the ears,” IndyCar Series senior technical director Les Mactaggart said. “So we’ve had a reduction in pitch and reduction in noise level. It will be noticeable.”

Baffles have been installed in the exhaust manifolds (contained in canisters) just past the collector. There hasn’t been an adverse impact on the 100 percent fuel-grade ethanol-powered engine’s performance, and it’s a spec system.

“The first thing we did when it was designed was take it to Honda, which ran it on the dyno,” Mactaggart said. “There was no change in back pressure in the system, which would have affected performance.

“Having everyone use the same parts eliminates the subjective arguments that they have played around with it.”

They have been contemplating this for the past three years.

how much do you want to bet that one of their guys (Penske maybe) goes into the muffler business? Billy Boat makes some really nice exhaust stuff, this would be right up his alley.

Mufflers on cars has become a trend. As urban sprawl creeps out towards the racetrack that used to be on the outskirts of towns. The folks move in, knowing a racetrack is near, has been for years. Then they start bitching.....

we had tons of rules at a few of the tracks we raced at years ago. First race of the season everyone had their baffles in their "supertrap mufflers", then after hot laps you take them out :p

Almost a couple of years ago there was a picture someplace on the internet of a crapwagon with a couple of Supertrapps or Power Cores joined on just after the collector. They ran those mufflers first during an open test at Sears Point in April 2005.*

*Why is my brain polluted with such crap? The Futility Watch must be getting to me.

You need an intervention.

hAteRz have a special section in their brains just for this kind of stuff. Motorsport.com has 'em in the photo gallery but it ain't worth the effort to go look 'em up. Point is moot....they suck.

Unless another Iowa type racetrack pops up in some cornfield somewhere, the direction of the earl is street races orchaestrated by those guys Tony complained about before all this crap started. The old CART guys led by Penske himself. Handwritings on the wall on this one. The IRL wore out their welcome at most oval tracks and is now forced to lower the drone of their engines so as not to offend the mass population of these new urban areas they're running their races at. They'll still be offended, just not by the noise.
