F-22 Raptor Tripped Up by the...International Date Line...

It destroys anything else out there, but the international date line is now 6-0 against the F-22 Raptor.


...on a 12 to 15 hours flight from Hawaii to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. The U.S. Air Force's mighty Raptor was felled by the International Date Line (IDL).

When the group of Raptors crossed over the IDL, all of their computer systems crashed. Everything from fuel subsystems, to navigation and partial communications were completely taken offline. Numerous attempts were made to "reboot" the systems to no avail.

Saw this reported over the weekend on CNN. They are really lucky the avionics wasn't effected. At least they were able to fix it quickly.

My first thought seeing the report was the Microsoft BSOD. :laugh:

Pretty funny read, but I thought the most destructive glitch was the infamous Mars orbiter that crashed and burned because one engineering team used metric units and another used imperial for related calculations.

Maybe in space, but here on Earth, the Therac 25 is the worst one I can think of (5 or 6 people died as a result).

The USA has flown 10 Low Observable aircraft now and not one other nation has yet.

I love how Russian Fanboys say they will have an operation Stealth fighter with AESA by 2010-12.

The F-22 first flew in 1992 and is just now deploying. The Russians have not demonstrated any stealth yet. Or they could try and copy it and call it the Raporski

Also the two Technology Demonstrators Tacit Blue and Have Blue.

You could argue for the YB-49 too.

Just for grins, any theories about what actually happened?

I'm assuming the navigation uses GPS to position the plane and flight path in time and space relative to GMT but someone forgot to account for what happens when today becomes yesterday.

That would shut down everything including communications?
