The NY Times had an interesting article today on this year's reunion of survivors, which I guess will be the last. Yesterday they had a series of interesting pieces that was written in 12/1941 about salvage efforts and the like at PH following the attack which they never ran because wartime censorship killed the articles.

December 8, 1941, my grandfather, like many other Americans, went down to sign up for the Navy. When they found out he was color blind, they told him no. He walked across the street to the Army recruiting station and went to sign up for the Army. They asked him if he would be able to tell the difference between a US soldier and an enemy soldier, he said he could without a doubt. They said welcome to the Army.

He ended up in the 7th Armored, survived the Battle of the Bulge and saw the end of the war in Germany.

If anyone questions if this truly was the greatest generation, they should think about his answer when asked why he volunteered for the Army -"Because it was just something that needed to be done." No fanfare, no chest thumping. Just something that needed to be done.

To put the 69 years separating the 'Day of Infamy' from today in perspective, on Dec 7, 1941 it had been 69 years since Ulysses S. Grant had been re-elected president in 1872.

1941 was a long time ago, and yet this day is still remembered. :thumbup:

I can't find it, Nappy. Must have been there but now I find, like indyfan, nothing.

LA Times (print edition) has a great picture and long article on the front page of two old gents (90 and 87) who were there at opposite ends of the harbor and happened to move next door to each other in Monrovia, CA twenty years later. They have lived there and been friends ever since. Very unassuming, it was months before they became friends and discovered they had a shared background. That's the "it needed to be done" spirit IlliniR alluded to.
