Stoddart 90% certain to go to Champ Car

We understand that there are still three options available to the team, all of which will involve acquiring current teams. Stoddart is not giving anything away at the moment but says that it will probably be an Indianapolis-based team. Stoddart says that there are three drivers in the frame, all of them ex-Minardi F1.

My guess is Bettenhausen/CTE/HVM/Teamneedsasponsor

Nor, for that matter, is Robert Doornbos who seems more and more likely to be sliding into a Scuderia Toro Rosso drive next year, alongside Tonio Liuzzi. If that happens Scott Speed is going to be looking for work although it is possible that Red Bull will help out its long-time protege by funding a ride in America, perhaps alongside Neel Jani at PKV Racing.

wow - :saywhat: Neel Jani and Scott Speed at PKV? whaddya do with Legge and BaltimoreOriol?

Man, I'd hate to see Scott Speed bumped. Likewise Katherine Legg. I'd like to see them get one more year with their teams and see if/how they improve.

Didn't HVM say they have a sponser for next year or something about a sponser but it was too late to user for this year? Or am I confusing them with one of the other 20 teams that are scrambling for sponsers

The worse things sounded for Doornbos in F-1 the better they sounded for a Dutch CC team over here. Doornbos is said to have $10 million to spend and Muermans will go where Robert goes. I can't imagine Bernie sitting by while money HE is supposed to play with goes to America, so that'll be the reason Doornbos stays, if he does. BUT...Jos has some money behind him:) He IS a crazy Dutchman, afterall and Bernie doesn't give a crap what HE does. Bunch of other Dutch drivers to fill out the team but KK'd be smart if an American found his way in.;) Can KK convince Stoddart to ante in if Muermans stays with Doonbos in Europe?

Question is, what do they think of Stoddart, and would they follow a Minardi entry in CC?

What 3 teams might sell?

I presume:

No chance: N-H, FCR, RuSport, PKV and Team Australia
Leaves: MiJack, Rocketsports, DCR and CTE-HVM

Even from those, MiJack, Rocketsports and DCR seem doubtful.

Giancarlo Minardi is running the real Minardi again in lower formulas. Stoddart might still own the F1 rights but for all intents and purposes whatever he brings to Champ Car should not be considered Minardi.

For so long, many have said that Minardi would do well to join Champ Car, because with their budget they would dominate. Funny that it now might be happening.

I guess we are about to find out. Also, I think the diehard Minardi fans would follow their move. I know there is a group in San Fran, so maybe they will show up at the LBGP, Phoenix and San Jose.

Dreyer & Reinbold are in Indy, no? :gomer:

Seriously, if its HVM I feel good for them.

Its good for the series to add more seriously deep pockets with a good sense about how to spend it. I wish it was adding a team though.

And I wish new drivers weren't pushing out existing one. There has been too much driver turnover.

http://www.dreyerreinbold.com/ they have the monopoly on BMW and high prices here in Indy. Infiniti too. EXPENSIVE!

anyway - I'm not sure the 2 "cultures" would mesh. D&R is as Gomer-centric as you can get, well, maybe not as bad as Foit or Vi$ion$, but they are gomerfied for sure. If D&R comes to CCWS, they will certainly still run the Fie-Hunnert. And Sarah "Meatball" is now married into the Vi$ion$, so this is unlikely....IMHO. Prove me wrong.

My first thought as well.

Reported as rumor that Russo has some big business opportunity in Europe and is putting the team up for sale.

Given how last year ended and how this year turned out I can see why he might want to try new challenges, but a lot of teams and owners have been through worse. Much worse.

The Boss just said he'll be doing "either" ChampCar or DTM next year. Sounds like he's just waiting for somebody with a lot of money to make up their mind(s). There has even been the suggestion that the Indy based team being considered for buyout is Dreyer and Reinbold. They just hired 2 ex-Fernandez engineers (while cutting back?) with CC experience and of course have met with KK previously. Ahhh, the intrigue. Robbie Buhl to CC! (Is he Dutch?:gomer:)

Stoddart to take 'Minardi' to Champ Car
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 09 November 2006
Nov.9 (GMM) Should Paul Stoddart set up his Champ Car team for 2007, the former F1 principal will call it 'Minardi', according to reports. The Dutch magazine Formule 1 RaceReport says that although original team founder Gian Carlo Minardi is also taking the name to the GP2 series next year, Stoddart actually owns the word 'Minardi' for use with non-Italian based racing teams. Former Minardi F1 drivers, meanwhile - including Jos Verstappen - are being linked with Stoddart's potential Champ Car squad, as is ex-Toyota test driver Ryan Briscoe. "There are quite a few of my ex-drivers getting around and there's always new talent," Stoddart said.

G.
11-09-06, 02:00 PM
"I'm buying an Indianapolis-based team, but I can't say more than that for now," he said. "I'd like to be able to announce it in Mexico City this weekend."

Stoddart was understood to be looking at buying the RuSPORT team, but he has ruled that out.

One possible target is the CTE Racing-HVM team, which has proved competitive this year, scoring a win and a pole position in the last two races.

Just reading Autosport.com today...

1 year ago in F1... I'd totally forgotten about this:

Legge makes F1 debut with Minardi

British driver Katherine Legge was impressed with the performance of Minardi's Formula One car after making her debut at the wheel of a Grand Prix machine on Tuesday.

...
The test was a pre-existing arrangement between Stoddart and ChampCar boss and Cosworth co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven before the sale to Red Bull was agreed.

Stoddart, Johansson 50-50 for 2007.

The Champ Car field could be set to expand further in 2007, if rumours circulating at Surfers' Paradise and Laguna Seca are anything to go by.

With an all-new Panoz-built chassis set to level the playing field somewhat next year, several teams have already thrown their hats into the ring, notably Pacific Coast Motorsport and Gelles Racing, but Champ Car could yet land two 'big name' players should the speculation prove true.

Paul Stoddart's involvement in the series would not be a great surprise, given his own suggestion that he was looking at entering a team to rekindle his competitive flame, but would be something of a hastily-arranged programme following weeks of silence on the issue. However, with Champ Car making its annual foray to Australia over the weekend, Stoddart took the opportunity to re-acquaint himself with the series, joining co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven on the PKV pit-stand.

According to sources on the Gold Coast, Stoddart admits that his chances of having a team on the grid next season remain only 50-50, but that his interest has not dimmed in the period since his involvement was the talk of the series.

The former Minardi team owner has been linked to backing from Dutch companies involved in the F1 operation, leading to speculation that he could run Jan Heylen - already backed by Muermans - next year. He also has connections with current PKV driver Katherine Legge, having given the Briton her maiden F1 run in one of his PS04Bs.

Quoting similar odds of fielding a team in Champ Car next season is Stefan Johansson, whose previous involvement as a team owner last precisely one season, before his American Spirit operation opted out. The Swede, however, admits to liking what he sees on the table for 2007, and told Crash.net's Press Snoop column at Laguna Seca that he was interested in returning, but could not commit to anything for next year as yet.
