Here is an update on the situation:

The Echelle has been returned to service and is fully functional again; the "halos" seen previously and believed to be due to "frosting" of the internal optics by some contaminent have been eliminated by a new cooling procedure/sequence.

Replacement parts for the SPICam Cryotiger cooler are being shipped today, and it is hoped that SPICam will be returned to service late next week. This schedule assumes that no unexpected glitches arise in the process of putting the instrument back into operation.

The situation of the NA2 guider is the least clear, but the vendor indicates that it *might* be repaired and shipped back to APO within 7 to 10 days. However, they have not yet completed the diagnostic work, and there may be undetected problems, so this must be regarded as an optimistic scenario.

GRIM2 is operational but continues to encounter intermitent quadrant failures which can be cured by power cycling.

DIS is fully functional, and recent throughput measurements indicate that it is working very well indeed post upgrade and realuminization.

********. Obviously the zener diode is operating in a reverse bias mode.

Fix that **** first, the worry about the SPICam Cryotiger cooler!

A bilateral zener diode is described having improved terminal characteristics including a low noise factor, a predictable breakdown voltage level in the reverse breakdown mode within plus or minus 3 percent, and providing a sharp reference voltage which is substantially independent of diode current. This bilateral conducting diode is achieved by utilizing a collector ring diffusion of the same conductivity type as the anode diffusion, but spaced from both the anode diffusion and the cathode diffusion. In the forward bias conduction mode, the flow of current from the anode to the cathode is collected by the collector ring and returned to the cathode providing a forward transfer efficiency which is typically 90 percent.
