View Full Version : What I did on my summer vacation

Grab yerself a beverage.

1) Left Wpg after the funeral of my aunt, my youngest uncle's wife. She was 43. Survived breast cancer 2 years ago, but it came back everywhere. (I know, downer way to start this post, but bear with me.) My mom, who had come in for the funeral, decided to stay to housesit, and check in on her brother for a while.

2) First night in Ironside, Michigan. Pool open until midnight - mr anait and I enjoyed a soak in the hot tub sans kids.

3) Second night in Sudbury, Ontario. Driving through Sault Ste Marie, over all those bridges, some of which seem to be going up into the clouds...I went a little white-knuckled. Got to the hotel after 11pm, in time to witness a friendly little spat between a bunch of drunk 20-somethings in the parking lot. :)

In the morning, found out that the day after we left Manitoba, a tornado touched down just southeast of our town, hitting a home with a pregnant women inside. She survived with scratches.

4) Four nights at a lovely lakefront cabin in Cobden, ON. Small sandy beach for the campground, as well as a rocky beach accessible from our cabin. Fantastic week there. Built the coolest sand castle complex with the kids. Spent one afternoon at waterslides, where the two oldest kids and mr anait misread the signs and went down the tough slide first. Mr anait ended up getting flipped over weirdly and bruised a rib or three. He was in major pain for a week.

5) Three nights in Midland, ON, at a hotel. Great big pool. Saw a medieval armory and heraldry museum. Went to Sainte Marie among the Hurons, a recreation of a Jesuit and Native Canadian settlement. Mr anait remarked on the many open fires inside and among so many buildings made entirely of wood.

6) Four nights in Oakville, ON, right off the QEW. Mr anait worked on the other side of the QEW, but I discovered that I am very capable of navigating the highways there. This was a big thing for me. Hotel pool perfect for us, and we had it to ourselves nearly the whole week. Spent one afternoon at Bronte Provincial park, at an outdoor 1.8 acre pool. I enjoyed taking mr anait to work each morning, and returning to enjoy a coffee in the lobby while watching the news or working on floor plans.

Found out that two days after we left, Sainte Marie among the Hurons had a big fire which destroyed the smithy and damaged two other buildings.

7) One night in Chicago. Took us three hours to get around Detroit b/c of construction. Streets and Trips ensured we drove the correct route on the Skyway to arrive at our Lakefront hotel. Man, I thought the freeways into Toronto were fast and furious. We did manage to get a wee bit lost going around the block (!) to get to the valet parking side of the hotel...ended up on a lower street level, in underground deserted parking lot movie hell...you know, with all those semi-lit columns where they film lots of car chases and things??

The hotel was great. Beautiful lobby/bar/restaurant/pool. And of course the views were amazing. It was fantastic to be in Chicago. I went to sleep in the most comfortable bed EVER, listening happily to the sounds of the city.

We were able to spend about two hours walking around the next day; Millenium Park, the Chicago Architectural Foundation, and a great little music store. Did a much too short drive/walk in Hyde Park; I snapped some pics, stopped at FLW's Robie House. Hard to walk away without going in, but we were already three hours behind schedule...which also necessitated us skipping Oak Park, and FLW's home and studio. It was very difficult to leave so soon.

On that day's drive, stopped at Winona State U to meet a friend of kid #1. Beautiful little college town.

8) One night in Minneapolis. Three wedding receptions that evening in our hotel. Rooms surprisingly soundproof. Next day built Lego creations for two hours with the kids at MoA, and did a quick look through the Discovery Store.

9) Arrived home very late Sunday evening. We called my mom from Fargo, who cryptically said she had something very important to tell us. I wondered if a) her cancer had come back, or b) one or both of our cats was gone...or, that she'd decided to move to Wpg. Nope. After the rental van was unloaded and most kids asleep, she broke down telling us that she'd been in a bad accident THE WEEK BEFORE, in our van...she is fine, thankfully, a bad cut on her right arm, which got infected, but seems to be improving...also bruised ribs. The passenger side was T-boned - the other driver ran a red light at high speed. My mom remembers the van spinning around and around. She was taken very good care of at the site, and at the hospital - and her sisters and a brother in Wpg were able to help her. The other driver was just devastated...his wife came over to see my mom, and was just weeping.

The van's a write-off. Should get an offer this week. Thankfully the veggie oil truck is working well. We're trying to get the '91 Civic running, so I'll have it for in town. Mr anait replaced the battery and a fuse, but still no dice. Anyway. I'm just glad we didn't have another funeral to attend when we got home. Once we get the settlement, I'll post a pic of the van. Nearly the entire passenger side behind the hood was pushed in about 2'. Seats now angled sideways at 45 degrees. Not a scratch on the upholstery, though.

Er, I was going to joke about the word "kids" in #2 (when you meant to type "clothes" ;) ) but after hearing about your Mum thought better of it.

[I]Sounds[I] like you had a blast, hope it all works out ok for you and the family.

^^^^ :D Heh, would have been a bit weird sans clothes with the 16 yr old desk clerk right outside the pool room. And the high school kids in the parking lot right outside the pool room windows. :p

It really was a great two weeks. Staying in so many different places, each with its own character - very cool. I'm bummed about the van, but whaddya do, eh? At least we don't have to pay any deductible; the other driver doesn't appear to be arguing against the witnesses.

Ed, I don't know what hotel we were driving under, but that minute of my life was pretty intense!! We stayed in the Embassy Suites Lakefront; must go back soon.

...Did a much too short drive/walk in Hyde Park...

Hmmm...maybe not...

Hyde Park may be a treasure trove of history and architecture, but it is also a war zone. A nice place to take a (short) drive to admire the buildings, but I would never advise walking around down there, especially to someone unfamiliar with the area.

Now if you and the Mr. ever want to go down there with a tour guide/bodyguard, look me up... ;)

I'm reading your story, enjoying it, but all I can think of is, MAN! You guys sure do leave a path of destruction in your wake!

I think Chicago is still standing, but I'll have to verify that later.

(glad to hear that most is all, ok. Sound like a great trip! I was arrested in Winona once...)

Wow, thnx for the headsup...I had no idea. The street we were on was so peaceful! Beautiful old, large, well-kept buildings...there were a few with 8' tall iron security fences, though. :D Guess that should have been my first clue. Hm. I did feel very uncomfortablely ogled by two guys who were walking around one of the buildings I snapped a picture of. And I don't normally feel uncomfortable getting ogled. ;) Maybe the spidey-sense was tingling.

You're on for the tour! We're working at saving more Air Miles for a jaunt to both Chicago and D.C., just the two of us.

Heh, yeah, I know. And it was weird, because the day we headed back through the States, there were tornadoes happening around Rochester and Minneapolis...but they'd all blown over by the time we arrived.

Arrested in Winona, eh? :) Frat party? :D

Is Winona a town of rich professors, rich alumni, rich retirees, what? There were so many huge homes, seemed a lot even for a university town.

K, this has been on my to-do list. However, I am always the one holding the camera!! :D I do have a few pics from this vacation, one with me in swimwear and a beach skirt, but it's not very flattering. I'm picking rocks out of the water. But if I can get them online somewhere, I'll post them. Then 'lock will realize he's been better off finding his own bathing suit pics. :p

FLW is awesome. It's hard to believe that the Robie house is 90 years old! From today's standpoint it could easily fit into the retro-futuristic styling of Googie of the 50's and 60's. Which makes sense as FLW was one of the most influential architects ever. I've visited Falling Water a few years back it is simply amazing.

Here are two pics of our written off van. We settled for a very reasonable amount this week. Notice the three missing side windows, but only a crack in the front windshield:

I'll have to ask my bro-in-law if he has any digital pics of the Durango we survived back in 2002. Side impact by the drunk driver, then over guard rail and head first into limestone cut. They pulled boulders out of the engine compartment. The rear seats got folded down so tight they couldn't be opened.

Got a lovely plate and six screws in my left forearm to show for it... :D

I'll raise that to a ruptured spleen and a lascerated liver. :\

It's funny how many folks haul thier family around in minivans that don't have to meet the same side impact requirments as cars because they are a "van" which means that they are not classified as "passenger" vehicles even though the mfg. stack them front to back with seating.

Our van was bought in 1997. I don't believe side air bags were an option at that time, but I may be mistaken.

When we buy a new vehicle, you can be assured it will have side curtain airbags. I have already eliminated many vehicles from consideration on this basis.

It was blatantly obvious how useless child restraints would have been in this crash. So in the meantime, each time I take my kids onto the road, I am bloody well aware that they should be in a better vehicle.

Im not speaking of side impact curtains, I am speaking of pilar supports and the amount of intrusion that is accepted upong the passenger compartment.

The requirments may have been increased within recent years but, back in 1988 when I was t-boned in the Caravan I was driving, the regulations didn't consider minivans as passenger vehicles and the area behind the front seats, where most kids ride, was considered the same as the bed of a pickup truck and did not get tested.

And by no means am I trying to single you out or lay any fault. That problem was on the car companies and the D.O.T. for allowing passenger compartments to fall into utility design specs. Like I said, hopefully, with the long running use of minivans as there have been it has changed since I had my wreck.

looks like I got out easy in that wreck 2 years ago, only a torn up shoulder & torn ligs @ clavicle/sternum & w/ the scapula... no surgery needed.

but if that SUV had rammed us 12" further up it woulda been my head judging by how badly the B pillar collapsed :\

:) No harm, no foul. I am truly not happy with the vehicle choices, either. It was just frightening to think, what if my kids had taken the impact of that crash, car seats notwithstanding. I said to mr anait, "I want a tank." He pointed out how much damage our tank could do to a less-equipped vehicle....but I'm still in a bit of shock.

As I was researching other vehicles, I saw some of what you're saying. And even though some minivans had side curtain airbags, some SUVs did not.
