Once upon a time AJ Foyt went road racing.

That's a picture of a much younger Sammich racing somewhere in France.

This weekend Foyt Racing returns to a road course with Jeff Bucknum.

That's a picture of Foyt Racing doing some road course testing.

More Futility as it happens... stay tuned.

Nice idea, but I'd like to leave that task open to others with more musical and lyrical talent than me.

Anybody feel up to the challenge?

Maybe if Carroll Smith and Dan Gurney were there to set his cars up for the roadcourses, he could somehow still be a big 'muricun roadcourse hero..... Gurney has said that the GT40 with the 427 side oiler was probably the easiest to drive race car of his entire career and that he could click off competitive laps without breaking a sweat.

LOL, Handling? Yes, it was a Handling problem caused by a completely broken right rear suspension.

Bucknum spun and stalled in Turn 11, and when the Safety Team restarted him under yellow, he decided to pull a "spectacular" burnout - launching himself over one of the concrete kerbs so hard that it collapsed the entire right rear corner. :shakehead

Just like the glory days in USAC when AJ would retire with "electrical trouble" when debris from a large whole in the side of his Offy would let a flying piece of connecting rod hit the distributor.

Sonoma, CA – 8/28/2006 Marco Andretti nurses his short-on-fuel car at Sonoma before teammate Bryan Herta (XM Satellite Radio car) suspiciously spun on lap 73. (Photo: Getty Images)

The talk after Sunday's Indy Racing League show here at Infineon Raceway was as much about Bryan Herta's suspicious spin than Marco Andretti's brilliant drive.

"There's no doubt he (Herta) spun on purpose," said Dan Wheldon, who was directly behind Herta when he looped his car on Lap 73 in Turn 7 to bring out a full-course yellow with seven laps left, which made it possible for Andretti to win instead of making a late pit stop for fuel.

"Bryan definitely took one for the team today and I understand teamwork but that's not how any race should be decided."

It always makes me think "WTF are they doing this for?" I meanthey absolutely suck, they haven't won dick since the days cheeeeber ran for them (right?) and all they do is trash cars and embarrass themselves. I mean, they don;t even TRY to do better.

Suck is a place too.

Actually he cracked the curb upon initial impact (one of my post-collision shots shows a sizable piece lying in the foreground while he was stalled), and the suspension was immediately flopping around when he started the burnout.

I have the whole thing on tape - haven't actually watched it yet, but I can say my hands instinctively jerked upon impact (I'm not used to videotaping accidents as opposed to stills, and I had been shooting the field going through the corner at the time, hence no stills). Will post footage for posterity here once captured...

The #14 pit was the first one at pit in, and I stayed nearby waiting for AJ to throw a laptop or something, but all I got was footage of him driving Bucknum away in a golf cart.

Alas, I have no footage of the burnout (no digital or 35mm stills either) - I must've assumed he would just get a tow-in and was unprepared.
