Paul Tracy managed a 16th place in the qualifying. He hit the turn 4 tires, taking out the front suspension and rear wing. Heylen also lost a "fast" lap time to a spin. Even losing the lap he qualified ahead of Clarke, Pastorelli and Tracy.

Looks to be a bad start for the CTE/HVM pair with Philippe in 11th and Clarke in 14th.

Was at the race today.

Having some beer and Margs now.

Hot today but the shade in the afternoon was nice.

Paul and AJ had lots -o- oversteer in the hairpin.

Justin looked smooth but didn't get the fast time.

:flame: No freaking jumbotron easily visible from the
entrance to turn 1 grandstands (where my tickets are for on race day).

Heylen was on track the most of anybody and roasted a set of reds
in Qual.

Well into the shower and out to dinner for me.

Missing Shorty.

Oh and Champcar put out a huge card that anyone could sign
and they will present it to him.

Very nice crowd there today. In the morning I was wondering if anybody was going to show up, but by noon the place was packed. It was as good a Friday as any since they restarted this race in 2002. Sixteen cars is pretty thin out there. The get well card for Shorty is great. The support series all have large grids. I love the look and sound of the new Atlantics cars. There is some weather moving in tomorrow, so we may have some wet racing fun.

Saw the #10 car being towed to the pit lane at the CLOSE of the CC qualifying session today. Talk in paddock of Rahal running a 3rd car in Mexico City IF he tests well and IF the title is already in hand. Crew NOT looking forward to a 3rd entry but next season with more prep time is a different story.

Did you see the guy on the jumbotron w/ the no-twIRL tee-shirt.

Eric G. (announcing) was speechless.

Later I got a picture of him leaning against a truck checking out the trailing end of the Champcar girls. Shame on you eric.

Also K. Legge likes milk with her brownies. My Daughter was so proud.

I talked to the no-IRL guy later and gave him the thumbs up.

Saw the #10 car being assembled and got a little choked up. Kids wanted to
sign the car.

Finally cooled off now, 1 beer, 1 marg, 1 shower w/ wife.

Huge cheers in grands stand 2 when the no IRL t shirt guy was shown. I too was surprised how many people were there. GS 7 was 2/3's full and all the stands has people in them. It was good vibe.

Great crowd again today. The grandstands were probably 2/3 full for Atlantics and Champcar qualifying. There were alot of PT haters in the section around us. Every time he had a problem, cackling cheers from the throngs. Reminds me of when MA was in the series and about half the fans hated him. The Formula BMW race was terrific, lots of lead changes and passing throughout the grid. The rain held off today, we will see about tomorrow. Only two of the granstands are reserved seats this year, with all the others being general admission. There won't be any empty seats tomorrow. The Altitude Network, which is Stan Kronke's TV network that covers the Avs, Nuggets, etc, will rerun the race tomorrow night at 7:30 mountain time. There wasn't squat promotion done this year for this race. I hardly saw a billboard or heard an advertisement on the radio or anything. I thought that the crowds would be way down to the point of embarassment. The only explanation I have for the success of the race is that they have now run it for 5 years, and people are just marking it on their calendar automatically. Maybe this is turning into a mini Long Beach type situation that will become a good tradition after a number of years.

Again Justin was very smooth all day.

AJ and Paul were point and shoot racing.

N. Phillipe was trying every line known to man all day long.

K. Legge was all over the map had several long lockups in T1

Scanner talk:

Paul was not happy with the reds. Wanted them off the car.

Bruno is a whiny Biatch. I think he was crying in the cockpit during
qualifying.

Justin felt like he couldn't get an open area to really run.

AJ was very cool and collected the whole time.

The DP's being paid for by Tomy Drissi's movie money. Just a freebie for Tonis to get some seat time and try and help out what up until now had been a hopeless backmarker.

TK made Paul's DP look respectable for the first time in about eight tries. Too bad the power steering broke on the recon lap

I like how SB just runs over there and shoves him. Then in post race says PT had it in his eyes that he was asking for it. I think SB was very calculated in going after him knowing he was on probation.

I doubt he gets parked. They aren't going to park him in Canada. They'll chalk this up as a racing incident. PT seeing red as usual. You can't expect people to be afraid of him and just not try to pass him knowing that will happen. I can't imagine a series without him around though.

On the bright side, at least the championship is a little closer and there's even more drama. :)

Daring Tony Cotman to sit you down is not very bright.

Which makes perfect sense as PT isn't very bright.

However you slice it, and regardless of which side of the PT move you come down on, Denver was a strong event. Again.

I'm going to eat my words from a few years back when Denver first popped up on the sched.

Despite being one of the midget-length street events, it's sure turned out fine

Spickly, in defense of the .1RL, there were more fans on the front stretch. I counted @ least 2 dozen. :gomer:

I was surprised how many people there seemed knowledgeable about the series at the race - in particular the pit skirmish last week at San Jose and the points standings. I sat next to fans who flew in from New Mexico and Alabama (a Florida transplant with a UF National Champions 2006 hat). A lot of folks were making a mini-Colorado vacation based around the race.

Whereas I'm a fan of the road courses and would like to see the diversity of the series return, I think that assuming all street-race goers are event goers is not very accurate. I'm sure there were a lot of people there just for the party, but a lot more were there to follow the racing.

With little promotion compared to years past, Denver once again put on a great show that had the fans on their feet cheering in Turn 9.

Good job Champ Car.

So Tracy doesn't think he will face any suspension because he thinks he is bigger than the series:

Foot meet mouth. PT, STFU before they decide to make an example of you. Don't antagonize the stewards.

Big deal, he did with the benefit of FCYs, and by leaning on P2P.

And setting some bloody fast lap times. He's still got talent... what he's lacking is brains.

Aha... at least you admit they are "fans." :gomer:

And that's not counting the dozens of vendors.

He didn't say "fans" of what! Also, there were at least 20 beach volleyball women in attendence. :)

After the enjoyment of this race because the tires ended being a huge unknown, I was thinking. If all the teams knew the tires would go off much earlier, they would've all probably started on them and came in early and used blacks the rest of the way, which would've changed Bourdais' and Wilson's races and probably made the race a little less fun (i.e. passing on track and not getting a near perfect car).

Is there a safe way to provide an alternate set of tires without disclosing their properties (softer, really soft, harder, shorter life, longer life, etc.) that can't be used until race day, and they must use one set?

Just listened to the audio roundtable, and they mentioned that 20K would be a good attendance # for the race. Someone mentioned that stands had been removed, and that losing Centrix as title sponsor just weeks before the race really hurt the race promo.
