Pretty clear marketing genius Simmons didn't understand motorsport marketing and how to create sponsor value.

Who won in this deal? Simmons got his name back in the news. A few more people outside of NJ and WoO now know who PJ is, but he won't likely be in an IRL car again. I, for one, now have heard of Anthony Carmello, but I still won't be watching an NBA game.

Who wants to bet that we'll see Simmons again or that I am Indy will live past this season?

So far in the Gene Simmons/IRL odyssey:

Pluses:

I guess you could say Gene brings better looking skanks to the earl races than used to attend previously. At least their weight to height ratio is acceptable.

Minuses:

Mindy song

500 ratings down.

One raceteam (Hemelgarn) out of business directly attributed to Simmons involvement of doing nothing positive.

Absolutely nothing positive happening in that league that's been generated by him or his group. Tony was taken AGAIN. :gomer:

There were 33 cars at the race in May. That was FTG's only goal. Next year they'll roll out some new gimick.

The ironic thing about the Gene Simmons - PJ Chesson deal is that they met because they both have ex-playmate girl friends. Well, Chesson was trying to get Playboy to sponsor his IRL effort for 3 years now, even before he showed up to IPS. His plans included getting Playboy clothing to sponsor the deal or getting them to offer PJ pages to sell. Well nothing happened, because Playboy had zero interest in racing. The ironic part is that this year Playboy went racing, big time, but in Grand-Am! Opps.

There was a time when Playboy tried to define what it meant to be cool and male. I presume that is still true, but its been a long time since I opened a Playboy and, um, read the articles. :gomer:

In any case I doubt a guy who pulls condums over his head for local TV, has bad tats, and spends the month of May in the hotel bar drinking until he is sh#tface, is their definition of cool.

That class of trash reads a different porn rag.

And crashing on the second lap could only have been topped by crashing on the parade lap (though it wasn't his fault)

Gene's check for the drum loop-tape he found in the studio cleared when he cashed it. Otherwise, Gene don't care. :gomer: :D

I'm sure Playboy isn't interested in sponsoring white trash douchebag lifelong failures as racers like Chesson, which is probably why they went to sponsor guys like McDowell, Gidley, and Dalziel instead.

Giving this thread a bump, since Ad Age (http://adage.com/article?article_id=110690) discusses the Simmons / IRL partnership.

At his first meeting with TG, Simmons tells TG that the logo sucks, and that the IRL used to be number one form of racing in the US until NASCAR exploded.

Happy reading!

^^^^ Our only precondition that you become an Indy fan is that you love it. You don't have to know squat."

After all, Simmons is the guy who refused to use the preferred acronym for his first client, Indy Racing League, because IRL sounds "corporate and worse" (worse, in this case, being "a disease").

Only to FTG could this happen.

I had to check the date on that piece. I usually expect better from AdAge.

Nothing in it is new. Its a complete rehash of stuff that was put out in the run up to Memorial Day.

It mentions Carmelo but fails to point out he is no longer an owner. Or that by my count three teams couldn't show enough sponsor value to stay in business. Or that ratings are down. Or that there will 17 cars at MIS.

Or that the most loyal IRListas over at TF complained for months that Simmons was AWOL and now say he was just a huge mistake and disappointment.

I guess GS thought it was time to put out a little positive PR (about himself).

Simmons gets $2million for all his efforts.

"When we sit at home, we make more money than we do on tour," Mr. Simmons says.

Get a clue, Gene. You should have told Tony-san to cancel the rest of the IRL season and concentrate on buffing the image of the one great race he has totalled effed up.

Once more, proof that Tony George only remains on the planet because of sheer luck.

lessons in the generation of new money. In all fairness to Simmons/carmelo/chesson the Carmelo-anthony ownership deal to attract new sponsors aint working. Maybe Hemelgarn's operation would have been more successful if they teamed up with the US Treasury Dept .

"The Indy Racing League used to be No. 1," he says. "Nascar eclipsed it and left it in the dust ... because, quite frankly, Nascar did a better job of it."

Um, since when was the IRL ever "No. 1?" :shakehead

The IRL would make more money if they just stayed home and ran their one race in Indiana. I'll bet the rest of the IRL season does not produce more than 5% of the total value produced by the IRL.

When its all about Indy then it not about everything else. Have your race. Keep it great. But let others worry about the series.

You can see he put a lot of effort in his research. He made up stuff he knew they'd want to hear and have brainwashed themselves into believing.

 to Simmons for getting his piece of the TG pie.
