MONTREAL (CP) - A spectacular 15-car crash left four drivers with injuries Saturday during a Star Mazda series race, a support event at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The crash came on the first lap shortly after a rolling start, when series leader and pole position holder Daniel Herrington's car smacked into a tire wall after touching wheels with Michael Potekhen's car.

Harrington's bounced back onto the track and caused a chain reaction pile-up that left tires, parts, fuel and other debris strewn across a long stretch of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

The four injured drivers were taken to Sacre-Coeur Hospital for treatment.

Herrington, of Winston-Salem, N.C. was released with no major injuries, a Canadian Grand Prix statement said.

Brad Jaeger of Cincinnati suffered a concussion and will be held in hospital overnight for observation; Gerardo Bonilla of Orlando, Fla., who had contusions to a foot and a lung, was to have further tests Saturday night; and John Pew of North Palm Beach, Fla, suffered from dizziness. Pew will also have further tests.

Only 26 of 41 cars restarted the race and there were some smaller crashes after that, but no injuries.

Adrian Carrio of Monument, Col., won the race ahead of Matt Varsha of Atlanta. Potehken, of Silverthorne, Col., whose car was intact, finished third.

Between this, Bourdais' crash, Joey Hand's wreck last night, and the NASCAR carnage, it was an ugly weekend for road racing, but at least everyone was ok.

Imagine a similar accident with Busch cars. You'll need a Roto-rooter to clear the track.

Maybe, but after they pull the hood and fenders off and duct tape the hell out of everything else, they'll be right back on the track...making sure there are enough yellows to get all the commercials in the rest of the race.
