So, Thursday practice is labeled an "open test", thereby eliminating any chance comparison of attendance numbers with a certain "three day festival of speed" running a bit further north.

Eddie Cheever, Jr. seems to have taken his clichéd "flying fighters in a gymnasium" comment seriously. Here's a picture of Cheever being passed on the outside by Sam Hornish during today's session:

Meanwhile, Ol' AJ and Flip, nicely refreshed from their long nap in Kansas City, demonstrate the brilliance of decades old oval setups:

Local news had Scott Sharp on last night- called this "the best field ever to race at Richmond."

The best, though, was the League's Marketing VP:

"We were shooting at too broad a fan base. We see IndyCar fans as NASCAR fans. We target to motor sports fans. "

Apparently a graduate of the Anton George School of Public Speakery.

Quals washed out and the grid is set according to practice times.

"The Nos. 5 (Buddy Lazier) and 14 (Felipe Giaffone) cars would not have made qualifying attempts. Lazier’s Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone made contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 4 in the first session. The team will have the back-up car prepared for the race. The A.J. Foyt Enterprises team changed the engine and multiple other components after a plume of smoke was visible after eight laps."

That takes real talent to blow the spec engine in 8 laps.

I guess they don't hit the wall anymore, just the SAFER barrier?
