Let’s put things in perspective – the TV ratings in the U.S. have always been pretty dismal,” Ecclestone said. “Single-seater racing in America is extremely marginal, and even a top-end NASCAR race only attracts the same sort of TV viewers as F1 gets in Italy for an average race. That’s nothing to write home about.

“F1 has never got anything good out of the U.S. We’ve never had a big committed U.S. sponsor. We could hold 10 Grands Prix in the U.S. and a handful in Europe to boost F1’s popularity in the States – but what would be the point of that?”

posturing?

McLaren boss Ron Dennis, however, believes it is likely that Indianapolis and F1 will eventually agree to a deal and that IMS will continue hosting the event.

“Last year was a bit of a setback for the sport,” he said, referring to the withdrawal of Michelin teams that turned the race into six-car farce. “Keeping the race on the calendar will depend on the fans’ enthusiasm. I wouldn’t be surprised if this year’s audience is quite good. I still think a race at Indy next year is a possibility.”

I totally agree

The teams, at least, appear to be making some effort to compensate U.S. fans for last year’s disappointment, agreeing to support U.S.-based motorsports travel company Grand Prix Tours’ “Kiss and Make Up” party coulda left the Gene Simmons reference off there you boobs in downtown Indianapolis on the eve of the race. Bridgestone will also host a race preview party at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, including presentation of the Canadian Grand Prix on the track’s big screens.
