Fresh from a smashing 5th place win on the road course at Watkins Glen, Foyt Racing and their Brazilian coiled snake Flip Giaffone take on the 24 degree banking of the 1.5 mile Texas Motorspeedway.

Texas is the site of Foyt Racing's greatest success in the IRL when, in 1997, a USAC scoring error put Billy Boat on the top of pylon when the checkered flag waved. After bitch slapping Arie Luyendyk and stealing the winner's trophy, AJ went home convinced that the IRL had vindicated his belief in racing only with American drivers on ovals (see above).

Practice and qualifying observations to follow...

I prefer the Visible from Space 500. NASA and NORAD are on alert for this one.

It's arguably the best race on their schedule. My friend lives in Dallas, and he said the cars race really well there. In fact, he was there for the CART practice in 2001 when the guys were getting blackout effects. He said the CART guys were going so fast it was literally scray.

A stupidly high probability of killing someone does not make for a good race. :shakehead

Racing is a dangerous business. Still, even with Texas being dangerous, I'd say it's still a lot safer than it was in racing in the 1970's.

No crashes at all. An engine failure and an electronics failure and that was it. Race did not live up to its "crash o matic" moniker.

100% 100% throttle and 4000 pounds of downforce. And the IRL faithful are declaring it a boring snoozer as well as pondering why Texas has lost it's excitement. Nary a timely yellow to keep the postergirl on the lead lap as well.
And the emerging theory of why the field was so spread out was a lack of yellows, which also forced a fuel economy race.

Didn't anyone in race control look at the script?

The post race interview with the postergirl explaining why she was so slow. (no one mentioned how much faster her teammate was running before retiring)

The "wave around".

How does Hornish pit from P2, under yellow, field stacked up behind the pace car, and yet he rejoins the field in P2? The "wave around"!

WTF is the "wave around" and is it an earl specific rule?

Neither did I. I forgot about it but noticed it on TSN when I was channel flipping during a commercial break of 'Deadliest Catch'......

Sorry guys, but the crabs of Alaska won out over the crabs of Danica.
