I ran at the SCCA Peru National Tour over the weekend in a friend's WRX in the STX class, and my co-driver uploaded this video compilation of my 3 Saturday and 3 Sunday runs. Not my best driving, but I never drove the car prior to this weekend. A word of warning, I drop an F-bomb at about 6 minutes in, as I hit a cone early on my last run. :(

It was second gear, and it is about more than just the racing. The social aspect is pretty cool too. You get to meet racers from all over the country and alot of them have some pretty nice setups. It is always fun when the guy you just corner worked with takes you back to his trailer and has a cooler full of beers.

Also, I learned that French Canadians can drink like no other. I went out drinking with these 4 racers in our hotel until 3 AM, when our run group was due to start at 8 AM. Somehow I advanced a position that day. I felt like a regular Al Unser Jr. ;)

What kind of rubber is on the WRX? It sounded like you could have used some stickier rubber.
How do you think your times would have compared in your MR2?
How long do they give you to familiarize your self with the track?
What was the fastest car of the weekend?

The WRX had Hankook Ventus RS-2, which is a max performance street tire. In STX you can only run tires with a treadwear of 140 or higher, which typically means the Hankook, the Falken Azenis, or the Kumho Ecsta MX, which is what I run on my Integra.

The MR2 probably would've been similar in performance to the WRX, but I think I would've done better in it because I'm more familiar with the handling characteristics of a RWD car. I've never autocrossed anything FWD or AWD prior to this year, and thats all I've done so far. The top car in E Stock (the class the MR2 was in) was .4 faster on Saturday, and .6 faster than the top car in STX (also a WRX). In stock classes you can run race tires, but the only mods you can make are lighter wheels (same width and diameter as stock), shocks, exhaust, and front sway bar. STX has wider, larger wheels, shocks, springs, swaybars, intake, header, exhaust, bigger brakes, some ECU tuning, racing seats, etc but is limited by street tires and the fact that the vehicles in the class (WRX, Mini Cooper, Integra Type R, etc) are not true sports cars.

You got to walk the track Friday evening and Saturday morning, and again during the break on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for me I raced first thing in the morning so that break was useless for me. They changed the track Saturday evening and you got to walk it again that night, and then Sunday morning. You also got a track map. One of my biggest problems running these events is that locally, we run on much smaller lots with alot less to memorize, and alot more runs to do so, so learning these huge airport runways takes alot of practice that I don't have yet.

The fastest car of the weekend was a C Modified, which is the autocross equivalent of Formula Ford:

http://www.autoxphotos.com/gallery/National%20Solo/2006/Peru%20Tour/MarkAndy/Sat%20Heat%205/IMG_3086.JPG

The fastest road car was this C6 Z06, which was about 5 seconds slower across both courses than the CM.

http://www.autoxphotos.com/gallery/National%20Solo/2006/Peru%20Tour/MarkAndy/Sat%20Heat%205/IMG_3034.JPG

Why didn't you drive the MR2? Was that class too crowded?

I sold the MR2 in January. I loved that car but it was too unreliable for daily driving, and had problems with the rev limiter kicking in at 5500 rpm that no one could seem to solve. I sold it to another autocrosser and he is having a blast with it. Right now I've been autocrossing my stock Integra just for kicks, and its not nearly as competitive or fun, but by driving a slow car at local events, I'm learning a ton about going fast, the results just don't show that yet. Come September I'll have another MR2, a hardtop or sunroof '93 model, since they are 200 lbs lighter than what I was running. Ignore Ank and Stu and all them, those cars are seriously fast and seriously cool.

Do you left foot brake? If not do others that you know of?

I don't left foot brake simply because I haven't taken the time to learn it yet. I really should, especially when driving a boosted car such as the WRX. When I drove the F Mod (autocross equivalent of a Formula 500) last year, I obviously had to left foot brake, but that is about it.

Get the story straight. The man who owned it since it was new died, and his mother inherited it after his death and didn't sell it for another two years, a period during which she put less than 2,000 miles on it. Yeah, a real chick car.

Me and my 1998 Mercury Tracer are going to compete in the Northwest Ohio Region SCCA auto-x on June 11, my auto-x debut.
