View Full Version : Gil, not trusting the IRL Med Staff????

An AP story on AOL states that Gil DeFerran is..." staying in close touch with Dr. Steve Olvey, who is CART's director of medical affairs, an old friend and a fellow Miami resident."
The story goes on telling about a test that will be conducted by IRL medical director Dr. Henry Bock to determine when Gil will be fit to drive again. If I could figure out a way to link the story I would as it's very interesting and, in my opinion, seems to lean toward the fact that Gil doesn't want to trust any Dr. other than Dr. Olvey.

The story was about the fact that DeFerran has had several concussions and even asked the retirement question, which Gil states he has not given any thought to. To quote,...``For me, racing has always been a very selfish pleasure". "I think the day that I perceive that I'm no longer better than I was yesterday or I no longer can do as good or a better job as anybody that I can think of, is really when one should start considering one's future."

If any of you have access to AOL or can pull up the story elsewhere it's an interesting read.

It's a testament to the fact that Olvey is that damned good.

Dr. Bock was one of Dr. Olvey's students, and from what I've read, they communicate frequently. (And it isn't just Olvey. Last year Terry Trammell skipped flying to the race at Motegi so he could stay in Indianapolis and operate on Jacques Lazier.)

Dr. Olvey is a neurosurgeon based in Miami. It seems to me that if Gil needs to follow up with a specialist near home, Olvey fits the bill. I don't think it is a "trust issue."

This is one area where there is no CART/IRL controversy. Please don't try to turn it into one. The level of cooperation between the CART and IRL medical staffs is an example for all of motorsport.

IIRC last year some of the CART med staff worked with Jason Priestly also.

As a nurse, I agree.
We all collaborate amongst ourselves and seek the help of many others in different and same specialties in the medical world in order to provide the best for our patients. It is our first and foremost goal.:)

Don't be silly dear....
Crow would go much better with beer.........
Cam can put some crow on the "barby" for you at the races and we only have beer there, unless you want to wash it back with Warlocks Tequila shots..........
And tequila can always be followed by a good game of Flip Cup.....
