Wow, just got done watching this on cable

Un-freaking-believeable!

I wont ever think the same, ever again, about Scuba Diving and Sharks. No CGI, no pyrotechnics, no stunt doubles, just pure fear and horror here folks.

All of a sudden, this movie has bumped to the top of my list for sheer terror. The whole movie keeps making you think what "you would do", if you were in their situation.

Scary thing is that the dive boats are still leaving them behind,if they have'nt drowned them. :shakehead

You guys need to read more diving forums. This is regarded by divers as one of the worst diving movies of all time. The "true events" this movie were based on 1) didn't happen in the Bahamas, 2) may have been a couple staging their own disappearance, and 3) had very little to do with sharks, even if it wasn't staged.

The only trace that was found of the two divers that disappeared in AUSTRALIA that this movie is based on was their gear (ditched, not shreaded as it would be in a shark attack), and a diving slate on which they recorded the events of their last hours. If they are in fact deceased, it was most likely dehydration leading to delirium and ultimately drowning that got them. Sharks are just a blip on the radar.

The true stranding incident, and others like it, could easily have been prevented by both the divers in question and the operation that took them out. Seasoned divers know to avoid an operation that uses hashmarks on a piece of paper to record divers in and divers out. A roster with the divers' names on it should be kept with a time in and time out column, and the on board DM should record all of this information accordingly. DAN (Divers Alert Network) has also created a system using tags and a peg board to ensure all divers are back on board.

Don't let some indy film producer convince you that an activity you haven't tried is exceptionally dangerous. There are inherant dangers to diving, but proper training, experience, and safe diving practices keep my outdoors activity of choice quite safe and enjoyable.

Here's a few images from my own encounters with the toothy beasts. They're actually pretty cute, don't you think?

Appollo 13 made me not want to be an astronaught and Armegeddon made me not want to be an off shore oil rigger turned astronaught. :)

Well, of course they don't look threatening when they're suspended in lime Jell-O.

LMAO

They won't let you get too close to them. Sharks actually tend to be afraid of divers unless there is food in the water. We had about 50 ft of visibility, and those sharks were about 30 ft away from me, so the image isn't what it would have been if they were swimming around me at a shark feed. I did have one swim straight at me and break away to the right about 10 ft from me, but I couldn't get the camera to focus before he was gone. So sad...

Most of my movie viewing friends thought it was "stupid".
I thought the opening sequences were kinda cheesy looking, I didn't realize it was an Indie film. That said, once the divers were officially abandoned, the whole tone of the movie changed, then I really started to enjoy it.

Like The Perfect Storm they say it's based on actual events, but all they have is the boat left and never came back, with the exception of the radio calls they had to make everything else up. Same with Open Water, two divers went in, some pieces of equipment came out; the rest is what the writers "think" happened. Now, I enjoyed them both, but as soon as I saw how they ended I dismissed the actual events part.

I fell asleep when we netflixed this movie. The movie was like 90 minutes long and I think it was almost an hour before they were even left in the water. zzzzzzzzzz

Speaking of Driven, has anyone noticed that the cast of that movie appears to be making its rounds on the show House?

Really? I watch House all time. Great show. Who on it was in Driven?

I guess that stupid movie left such an impression on me that all I remember of the cast is Sly and Burt Reynolds and that blonde.

One of the Divers has to be one of the "Broken Lizard" guys (Super Troopers, Club Dread)

Looks just like him, dont know his name though

Jimmy Bly's brother--Dr. Wilson (regular)
Jimmy Bly, Kip Pardue--on this week
Tall, brunette, Stacy Edwards--on an episode last year, I think (we've been watching reruns)
Brent Briscoe--not sure which episode but found his name in the credits (IMDB)

Jimmy Bly aka Kip Pardue was also in Remember the Titans.

So sad that I know this.
