Normand Legault said he's had preliminary talks with NASCAR executives in an effort to bring the United States' top racing series to the road course at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
"I would love to have it here. It is a super, super show," Legault said. "I am quite sure Canadian fans would take to NASCAR racing just like a match to dry wood."

Montreal surrenders. :shakehead

Is it true that the circuit allows only 2 races a year.
If so....? Just asking.

Legault has said in the past he would dump CCWS for NASCAR, but only if he got a Cup race, not Busch.
I think it woul d be a big mistake for NASCAR to come to Canada with only Busch to a major venue like Montreal.... especially Montreal. Quebeckers would feel insulted.
The best move NASCAR could make is to go to Mosport, and make that track their Canadian home.

As Bob Marley said, "Don't worry about a thing...". Hey, there's always Lima Peru or some such place.

This Montreal thread keeps going around and around. I guess no one in Quebec can deal with the fact that the Federal Government pay off money is GONE for good huh? :D
Old Norm is blowing smoke... (just like the forest fires)
The fact that NASCAR is a non issue with race fans in Quebec is besides the issue I guess. Just another stick in the eye to Ontario is the motive - where millions await the Cup cars...

I was thinking about the politics of this as I watched the Cubs game. I could see a Cup race in southern Ontario but French speaking Quebec ??? Stick a couple Quebecois (sp?) in cars and maybe it would work, who knows, but for a province that, from what I understand, is trying to maintain a seperate identity...

Those tanks would take a day to go around that circuit. They'd end up dumbing it down in typical NASCAR style.

Yeah....I heard about that proposal, but I would be totally shocked if got past all the bureaucrats. Especially in the Niagara Region, they are sooooo protective of the land there!!!

-Kevin Just over the border in Sudbury is a hotbed of Quasi French Boreal Forest Gomers.
NASCAR confirms they will be in Montreal in 2007. Link (http://www.torontosun.com/Sports/OtherSports/2006/06/18/1639296-sun.html)

Maybe if we ask nicely we can get that beret wearing, chainsmoking, beatnik added to the smilies to use as Le Gomer Québécois.

Upstate New York fans are starving for an oval race. An American dollar worth more in Canada and a location only minutes from the border are sure to bring in a large number of American fans. Niagara Falls has undergone many changes over the last couple of years, opening two Las Vegas-style casinos, world class hotels, and a host of other attractions. The track would only benefit the area's already healthy tourism industry.
1. I am an upstate New Yorker, and I am not dying for an oval race.
2. Yes, NF has undergone a tourism revitalization. But what does that have to do with attracting people from upstate NY? The old joke is that you only go to the Falls for gambling or with out of town relatives.
3. Are they going to put an oval track in the middle of a vineyard? The Niagara region is wine and cheese central. Not exactly typical NASCAR country.
4. The biggest point: the Canadian dollar is worth 88 cents US at today's exchange rate. Not exactly the selling point people think it is.
